Chechnya remains in the focus of media attention, both domestically and
internationally. Unfortunately, reports from the area concentrate on
fighting, terrorism and crime. This spreads the notion of the Chechens as a
savage tribe that is totally averse to law and order or tolerance in any
form. The notion is unjust. Outlaws are rare exceptions and cannot be
identified with the law-abiding majority of the Chechen people.
The website Chechnyafree.ru is aimed at portraying the Chechens as they
really are - a people of hard-working men and women who share an ancient
culture and high ethical standards. Pages on it deal with the ethnic
genesis, history, customs, religion and culture of the Chechen people.
Sections like "The Grief of One Affects Us All", "Chechnya as Seen by
Friends" and "The Chechen Diary" inform visitors on how this country helps
Chechnya rebuild itself. The section "Chechnya Speaking" provides an outlet
for Chechens to have their say (usually in audio form).
The initiators of the project extend sincere thanks to all who assisted in
designing and implementing the website Chechnyafree.ru, both visually and
musically. They would also welcome constructive criticism and cooperation
from all interested sides.
