How the letter of the list is formed
Release 1.01 dated 04.09.2000

Understanding of principles of forming and processing of the text of the list together with usage of language SubScript will allow you to lower efforts needed for making the issue of the list. For example, if you have a site, a part of content of which you is the content of your list, then you can form its pages so that the issuing of the list will be reduced to command "Take this pade from the web and place it into th issue of the list".

After inputting of the issue (via web or e-mail) and all necessary tests the system begins forming of the letter of the list. As a result the following structure will appear:

Our standart introdaction
considering your <BODY> and <STYLE>
Probably our banner
Probably textual information block
Your standart introdaction
Text of the issue inputted by you
Your standart ending
Probably textual information block
Your banner
Our standart ending

The parts written in thick print are formed by you. Standart introdaction, ending, banner, <BODY> and <STYLE> you won't change too frequently so you enter them once and change at the page Decoration of the list, while the text of issue you enter each time then Inputting the list.

Now the most interesting part - how to make system do everything itself.

The first step - the part of the letter "Text of issue" is filtered in special way for in the letter get only that text, which you want to see there. It allows to place special markers on your web-page and as a result the necessity to make the issue in two variants (for web and for the list) will disappear.

To the letter will get only the parts, which are placed between:

  • the marker of beginning of the text of the list - this is the line beginning with <!--subscribeBegin
  • and the marker of ending of the text of the list - this is the line ending with subscribeEnd-->
The lines containing markers don't get into the letter. If the text contain no marker <!--subscribeBegin, then it gets into the letter wholly. Is allows you to change nothing when inputting the issue, if you aren't interested in the facility of filtering.

Have you noticed that the marker of a beginning is not obliged to end by --> , and the marker of the end is not obliged to begin with <!-- ? Omission? No, it is a special opportunity to form the page. This is an example of the text of page, which is different on the web and in the letter of the list. We hope it will explain everything:
Code of the page On the web In the list

<LI> The price of milk isn't changed

  3. Caterwaul at the roof of the shop
  4. Meeting of cats-subscribers
Good bye.

The second step - the filtered text is united with your standard introduction and ending and after that is passed through the interpreter of SubScript. language. It allows, for example, to form a signature in the standard ending not as:

Good bye ! Contact us to the address news@mew.ru

but as:

Good bye ! Contact us to the address [SUBSCRIBE list_author_email]

That will allow to avoid changing the signature each time, when you change your e-mail address in Description of the list.

The last step - the dream of lazy person. If we unite knowledge how the letter is formed and how the SubScript language works and form our web-page using it, we will get very interesting effect: the content of the list job will reduce to one standart line containing the command of the SubScript language "Insert web-page into the letter":

[ SUBSCRIBE http://www.mew.ru/news.html ]

As a result the system will go to this page, filter it and insert necessary variables and send it to subscribers.

For very lazy person. Any Unix has cron, Windows-98 has tasksheduler. Do you remember their function? They carry out a stated command in stated time. Make this command send a letter to the robot of input the list via e-mail. The content of this letter as we have shown to you is now constant... From now on you should only renew your web-page in time.

You also can hire the man, who will write the news for you... ;)
