According to the deputy head of the education department in charge of construction, Magomed Bagaev, the repairs are being carried out in three directions. Repairs are going on ten schools under the presidential programme. The dates of commissioning should be informed to the President in advance. In short, there will be no problems concerning the repairs since Ramzan Kadyrov personally handles all issues. The mayor of the city Muslim Khuchiev has taken under his control the work linked with repairing these schools. This concerns 12 schools, which will be ready by September. Intensive work is going on in schools Nos 6, 10, 27, 37, 54, and 61 and college No. 4 in Staropromyslovsky district. Chechen diaspora

Opportunities for cooperation exist

Movlad Geldibayev, law professor, author of many articles and monographs on jurisprudence has been heading the Chechen Presidents liaison office in St. Petersburg and the North -Western Federal District for 6 months now, which is a very brief period of time. He has, however, been able to do something: the Chechens live in St. Petersburg work, study and go about their daily business like the rest inhabitants of the city. The major problem is that it is difficult for the Chechen Diaspora to hold regular meetings, but the leaders of the liaison office maintain constant contact with all the Chechens in the city and are abreast of their problems and if the need arises, arrange individual meeting. Plans are in hand to reactivate work of the cultural center and arrange regular cultural programs as soon as the center has its own premises. It would be nice to invite the Vainakh troupe or any other popular ensemble, but much depends on money. The problem of financing can be solved,- says M.Geldibayev. - The Russian theater from Grozny named after Lermontov recently visited the city on the banks of the Neva River and presented there the play Knights of the Mountain to a packed hall in St. Petersburg. The large audience included not only Chechens, but also many people from other nationalities living in the city. The Chechen liaison office and officials of the Chechen community in St. Petersburg keep watch over the republics youth and students. Chechen students can be found in different educational institutions in the city and, being a teacher himself, M. Geldibayev knows how to communicate with the youth. (more...)

Chechen history

Chechens one the worlds most ancient people

Chechens (self-assumed name " nokhchi" ) are the world" s most ancient people with unique anthropological type and culture. They are the largest ethnic group in the North Caucasus (more than 1 million people). The neighbouring Ingush people are very similar in genotype, culture and religion. Together they form the Vainakh people related by blood, common history, territorial, economic and cultural links and language. Vainakhs (Chechens, Ingushes) are aborigines of the Caucasus and speak Nakh, a language that belongs to the Iberian-Caucasian language family. The Vainakh (Chechen) ethnic and cultural complex was formed on the basis of various aboriginal people. Historically the Chechen community was formed as multi-ethnic and it kept absorbing ethnic elements of nomadic people and neighbouring high-landers, the evidence of which being the non-Vainakh origin of many Chechen clans. The history of Chechnya can be described as a continuing struggle for freedom and independence against outside enemies, in which periods of prosperity alternated with defeats and new attempts to revive the statehood. In the early Middle Ages (4th-12th centuries) Chechens had to take up arms to defend themselves against invaders from Rome, Sasanid Iran, Arab Caliphate and Khazar Kaganate. The centuries-long struggle forged a military union of highlanders and laid the foundation for their statehood.
