On 2 February the Battle of Stalingrad (now Volgograd) ended, becoming a turning point of the WW II in Europe. The Soviet Army had a landslide victory over the Nazi Germans. People of different nationalities fought together against Fascism. There were many Chechens among them. Recently, a delegation from the republic took part in the celebrations of the 65th anniversary of the Battle of Stalingrad. A letter inviting Chechen veterans to take part in the event came from the head of the Volgograd region Nikolay Maksuta. The delegation, headed by the chairman of the republican parliament, left for Volgograd. They received a warm welcome from the members of the local administration. They were accommodated at the comfortable Volgograd hotel and then were invited to take part in the festive events. They attended a solemn rally near the Eternal Fire monument at the Mamayev Kurgan, laid flowers at the tombs of the soldiers and participated in the conference The Battle of Stalingrad: 65 years after. Graded approach to taxpayers in Chechnya

The states tax policy must boost the development of various companies by creating favorable conditions for all spheres of industry and by using graded approach to taxation. Russias President Vladimir Putin repeatedly expressed this thought while commenting on the ongoing tax reforms. A graded approach to taxpayers takes into consideration peoples actual ability to pay taxes. This principle is revealed in two tax laws, adopted by the Chechen parliament- a tax on the companies property and on transport. Under the Russian Tax Code, a maximum rate of a tax on property for corporate bodies is 2,2%. Since the money paid by taxpayer go straight into regional budgets, the concrete size of a tax rate is determined by the countrys legislative bodies. Before the republican law came into force in 2007, there was a common 1% tax rate for all organizations- both for prosperous oil-producing companies and for poor agricultural sector. (more...)

29 February 2008  Grozny may host Russian Premier League matches
A delegation from Russian soccer's governing body arrived in the capital of Chechnya on Thursday to determine whether or not Grozny is capable of hosting Premier League matches. In a sign of Chechnya's recent relative stability, the Russian Football Union is currently discussing plans to allow Terek FC, a Grozny-based Premier league soccer club, to play its home matches in the Chechen capital. The team presently plays in the town of Pyatigorsk in the North Caucasus. Sergei Kulikov, who heads the Russian delegation to Grozny, said the final decision would be made after the trip to the capital of Chechnya. "We will be taking into account all aspects, including the situation with sports infrastructure, accommodation for teams and fans, as well as security issues," he said. Terek Grozny FC, named after the river that flows through the capital and onto the slopes of Mount Kazbek, were formed in 1946. However, in the mid-1990s the team was forced to disband, due to the escalating violence in the Chechen Republic. Terek last played in the Premier League in 2005, but were relegated the same season. The side won the Russian Cup in 2004. The team's former president, Akhmad Kadyrov, father of the current Chechen and Terek president, Ramzan Kadyrov, was killed in Grozny in a Victory Day attack in 2004 by forces loyal to the late notorious militant commander Shamil Basayev. Moscow has substantially scaled down the number of federal troops in the republic since two anti-separatist military campaigns in 1994-1996 and 1999-2001. However, periodic bomb attacks and clashes between militants and federal troops still occur in Chechnya and nearby republics, notably Ingushetia, which has seen a marked increase in militant activity of late. Chechen history

Chechens one the worlds most ancient people

Chechens (self-assumed name " nokhchi" ) are the world" s most ancient people with unique anthropological type and culture. They are the largest ethnic group in the North Caucasus (more than 1 million people). The neighbouring Ingush people are very similar in genotype, culture and religion. Together they form the Vainakh people related by blood, common history, territorial, economic and cultural links and language. Vainakhs (Chechens, Ingushes) are aborigines of the Caucasus and speak Nakh, a language that belongs to the Iberian-Caucasian language family. The Vainakh (Chechen) ethnic and cultural complex was formed on the basis of various aboriginal people. Historically the Chechen community was formed as multi-ethnic and it kept absorbing ethnic elements of nomadic people and neighbouring high-landers, the evidence of which being the non-Vainakh origin of many Chechen clans. The history of Chechnya can be described as a continuing struggle for freedom and independence against outside enemies, in which periods of prosperity alternated with defeats and new attempts to revive the statehood. In the early Middle Ages (4th-12th centuries) Chechens had to take up arms to defend themselves against invaders from Rome, Sasanid Iran, Arab Caliphate and Khazar Kaganate. The centuries-long struggle forged a military union of highlanders and laid the foundation for their statehood.
