Roads and bridges: signs of progress

The communication between mountainous regions of Chechnya has always been hampered by the lack of roads and bridges. For the past several years, local authorities are trying to overcome this problem. Lets have a look, for instance, at the region of Nozhai-Yurt. During the Soviet times and in the 90s, there were almost no roads there. For the past two to three years, the region is witnessing the turnaround. More than 23 kilometers of Gerzel Meskety Allera road and more than 30 kilometers of Meskety Nozhai-Yurt Benoi road have been covered with asphalt. The same trend is quite evident on the sample of bridges. A modern 120-meter long bridge has been unveiled in the regions center. New bridges have been built in Hochi-Ara and Rogun-Kazha. Ahead of the general elections on the 2nd of December, authorities erected new bridges in Lem-Korz, Gansolchu, Gordali and Meskety. According to the head of the department of economy in the region Adam Tekiev, the company Kazbek and a firm of the late Chechen assembly deputy Sultan Bilimkhanov, after whom the road Meskety Nozhai-Yurt Benoi is named, is overseeing all construction works on bridges and roads. Good memories about Mr. Bilimkhanov live in the very name of the road and in his companys activities: it has built a bridge in the regional center and is currently constructing a bridge in Meskety.

11 January 2008 New agric enterprise Druzhba created in Shatoisk region
A new agric enterprise called Druzhba(Friendship) has been created in the Shatoisk region of Chechnya on the basis of the former state farms Kirov, Shatoisk, Novaya Zhizhny and Leninsky. Plans are under way to start animal husbandry, in particular, sheep breeding in Shatoi. The new agric company was established in accordance with the Chechen government order, said Director of the enterprise, Rizvan Demilkhanov. The enterprise is still in its infancy since necessary equipment is yet to be fully installed and the setting up of additional workshops as well as agric equipment is yet to take place. But workers of the enterprise are already producing bread that was once the favourite of Chechens; mineral drinks are also being produced. In the not too distant future, Druzhba plans to begin, with the support of Chechen agric ministry, bee keeping and the cultivation of high quality potatoes.

10 January 2008  Installation of telephone services in the Gudermes region is to be completed by next spring The head of the regional communications center Djalavdi Islamhanov says installation of telephone services in the Gudermes region is to be completed by next spring. His conclusions are based on solid grounds. In 2007, more than 1,600 telephone numbers out of 1,874 were put into service at the local automatic telephone station. 1,400 of them were activated at private houses, and about 200 in organizations and companies. For instance, in Oiskhara, 120 numbers out of 208 were put into service by the local station. The local telephone services also did a lot to improve and develop cable infrastructure. Mr. Islamhanov emphasises that despite a growing usage of mobile phones the number of people who want to install landlines is not dwindling. The tendency is even more evident after December, when monthly rates for local calls have risen from 80 to 100 roubles. Budget workers and organizations that are charged with 240 and 600 roubles per month respectively, also find these rates quite affordable. This tendency prompts specialists of the regional communications center to install masts in all villages. It also explains why Djalavdi Islamhanov is so sure that installation of telephone services in the Gudermes region is to be completed by next spring.

Chechen history

Chechens one the worlds most ancient people

Chechens (self-assumed name " nokhchi" ) are the world" s most ancient people with unique anthropological type and culture. They are the largest ethnic group in the North Caucasus (more than 1 million people). The neighbouring Ingush people are very similar in genotype, culture and religion. Together they form the Vainakh people related by blood, common history, territorial, economic and cultural links and language. Vainakhs (Chechens, Ingushes) are aborigines of the Caucasus and speak Nakh, a language that belongs to the Iberian-Caucasian language family. The Vainakh (Chechen) ethnic and cultural complex was formed on the basis of various aboriginal people. Historically the Chechen community was formed as multi-ethnic and it kept absorbing ethnic elements of nomadic people and neighbouring high-landers, the evidence of which being the non-Vainakh origin of many Chechen clans. The history of Chechnya can be described as a continuing struggle for freedom and independence against outside enemies, in which periods of prosperity alternated with defeats and new attempts to revive the statehood. In the early Middle Ages (4th-12th centuries) Chechens had to take up arms to defend themselves against invaders from Rome, Sasanid Iran, Arab Caliphate and Khazar Kaganate. The centuries-long struggle forged a military union of highlanders and laid the foundation for their statehood.
