Chechen writers attend the All-Russia writers gathering

Contacts between Chechen writers and their colleagues from other Russian regions have lately gained momentum. A group of Chechen writers participated in the All-Russian writers meeting, which was held in Belgorod on the initiative of the governor of the region and chairman of Russias writers union. The meeting was devoted to the Year of Russian Language. According to a participant of the meeting, head of Chechnyas writers union, Eduard Mamakaev, the meeting was useful and pleasant. Over 250 writers from all corners of Russia attended the meeting. The conference devoted to issues of preservation and promotion of the Russian language was quite interesting. It said that purity of the Russian language depends on the level of culture and education of the people who live on the Russian territory. The writers discussed the opening of a monument to Russian language in Belgorod. A local sculptor has already prepared the sketch of the monument. Eduard Mamakaev said that writers from other regions had paid great attention to the guests from Chechnya. Many writers wished to discuss with Chechen colleagues and inquired about the life in the republic, especially the restoration of Chechnya. Eduard Mamakaev attended six meetings with the residents of the city and the region. He was especially pleased with the meeting at the university campus. In response to questions by students, Mamakaev told them in detail about the normalizing situation in the republic and speedy restoration work in Argun and Gudermes. He told the students that 850 facilities were restored in the past two months alone. Students inquired how Chechen youth studies and spends their leisure and what mode garments are popular among girls. Eduard Mamakaev was happy to hear from the professors of the university that Chechen students do their studies excellently. Governor of the region Yevgeny Savchenko also spoke highly of the Chechens in the region.

Modern Chechen literature

Chechen poetry of the 1920s and 1930s

During the late 1920s a number of Chechen scholars, among them Kh.Oshayev, were studying the political, religious and revolutionary aspects of Chechen history giving a strong boost to the budding Chechen literature. The poets were the first to respond. Poems about the historical past of the Chechen people first appeared in the late 1920s early-1930s, recreating the images of the heroes of old who once fought and suffered for the benefit of their people. In their poems M.Mamakayev (Bloody Mountains, 1928, and My Mothers Words, 1934), S.Baduyev (Partisans, 1934), A. Nazhayev (Shepherd, 1936) and others used the historical heroism of the Chechen folk songs in a bid to better understand the civic standpoint of their lyrical characters. The folklore thus became a much-needed stepping-stone on their way to creating Chechen national literature. The poets were writing easy-to-understand verse at a time when the process of Chechen enlightenment was only beginning to unfold. (more...)

07 June 2007  Staropromyslovsky District in Grozny Rebuilds 49 Houses, Improves Territory
Staropromyslovsky district in Grozny is currently rebuilding about 50 houses while at the same time improving adjacent territory. Ruslan Nukmayev, communal services chief of the Staropromyslovsky administration said that now that a contest for housing improvement was announced, the citys communal services are trying to do their best in such improvements. Particularly notable is the work being done around 49 houses, which are under restoration. The backyards are spruced up , paving is laid around the houses and sidewalks are laid with paving stones, childrens playgrounds in the backyards are equipped with swings and slides and benches are installed. These yards have been decorated with grass and flower-beds and they are supposed to be the most attractive yards in the district. Ruslan Nukmayev said that the Staropromyslovsky district administration has pledged to fully restore apartment house # 4 on Zhigulevsky street. The restoration work is now complete and the adjacent territory has been well developed, including the childrens playgrounds. It is observable from the nearby central thoroughfare and provides a nice view. When asked if all backyards in Staropromyslovsky district will be equipped with such nice-looking childrens playgrounds, Ruslan replied: At the very least we are going to install swings in all the backyards if we have the wherewithal. It is hard to say how many more backyards will be similarly improved, but we are doing our best to have our children play and enjoy life. The grow-up residents in the district are not being neglected either. When it gets hot in summer, it will be nice to sit back and relax in a shady place. For that purpose the administration will have small parks laid out in the new housing developments complete with benches, flowerbeds and greenery. Perhaps, the most attractive micro-district called Vozrozhdeniye (Rebirth) was commissioned early last month. It is one of the best-looking housing developments in the city of Grozny. It is closely followed by Berezka micro-district featuring nice recreation spots. The contest has placed third Ivanovo micro-district in terms of improvements. Ruslan Nukmayev said that by the end of the year all other backyards will be improved to match in attractiveness the Staropromyslovsky micro-districts.

Chechen history

Chechens one the worlds most ancient people

Chechens (self-assumed name " nokhchi" ) are the world" s most ancient people with unique anthropological type and culture. They are the largest ethnic group in the North Caucasus (more than 1 million people). The neighbouring Ingush people are very similar in genotype, culture and religion. Together they form the Vainakh people related by blood, common history, territorial, economic and cultural links and language. Vainakhs (Chechens, Ingushes) are aborigines of the Caucasus and speak Nakh, a language that belongs to the Iberian-Caucasian language family. The Vainakh (Chechen) ethnic and cultural complex was formed on the basis of various aboriginal people. Historically the Chechen community was formed as multi-ethnic and it kept absorbing ethnic elements of nomadic people and neighbouring high-landers, the evidence of which being the non-Vainakh origin of many Chechen clans. The history of Chechnya can be described as a continuing struggle for freedom and independence against outside enemies, in which periods of prosperity alternated with defeats and new attempts to revive the statehood. In the early Middle Ages (4th-12th centuries) Chechens had to take up arms to defend themselves against invaders from Rome, Sasanid Iran, Arab Caliphate and Khazar Kaganate. The centuries-long struggle forged a military union of highlanders and laid the foundation for their statehood.
