The Gabis madrasah in the village of Lower Noiber in Gudermess region held an annual contest of Koran readers dedicated to the memory of Akhmat-Khadji Kadyrov, the first President of the Chechen Republic. Taking part in the contest were students of Islamic educational institutions in the Republic. Members of the jury included representatives of the Spiritual Directorate of Dagestans Moslems, who on arriving in Chechnya paid respects to the grave of Akhmat-Khadji Kadyrov, recited Koran surahs to the goodness of the deceased. The contest drew guests of various faiths from all the republics of the Northern Caucasus. Also attending were representatives of all ministries and institutions of Chechnya. Over one thousand people listened enchanted to Koran recitals, according to Chechnyas mufti, Sultan-Khadji Mirzayev. I never realized that we had such well-educated youths, such great Koran readers, he noted. I, myself, learned Koran recital, without doing anything else. And I was greatly impressed by the proficiency of contest participants. And I could notice only trifling drawbacks in their performance. Tamerlan Saidaliyev, of the Nur madrasah from the village of Znamenka, placed first, getting a prize worth 50,000 rubles. The second and third spots were shared by Vakhit Askhabov and Turpal Ortzuyev form the Gabis madrasah. (more...)

31 May 2007  Number of kidnappings rising in Dagestan every year
The number of reports on kidnappings of people in Dagestan is rising with every passing year, said republican prosecutor Igor Tkachev at a closed meeting on this problem, which was held by Dagestan President Mukhu Aliev. For instance while in 2002, authorities registered 81 reports, in 2006 already over 150 and during the four months of 2007 71 reports on kidnapping of people, the press service of the Dagestan president and the government quoted the prosecutors words in its statement. According to Tkachev, if before 2003, people were abducted by crime families to wrest ransom, starting from 2003, authorities receive up to 50 percent of reports on abductions, connected with kidnapping of young girls for marriage. At the same time, the prosecutor continued, there are facts of abducting people by persons, passing themselves for officers of secret services, stationed both in Chechnya, as well as all over the North Caucasus, which aggravates the social and political situation and hamstrings the prestige of local bodies of self-government. All in all, Dagestan authorities registered 42 cases of kidnapping people between 2001 and 2006 by persons in camouflage uniforms or introducing themselves as officers of secret services. As many as 23 criminal cases were instituted. Incidentally, out of 71 registered reports over the past four months of the current year, people in camouflage uniforms acted only in six cases as abductors. Two criminal cases were instituted in connection with the above facts. It turned out later that the two cases of abductions were of criminal nature, the prosecutor emphasised. The greatest number of reports on kidnapping people by persons in camouflage uniforms comes from the city of Khasavyurt and the Khasavyurt district, bordering Chechnya, where 12 criminal cases were started in connection with these facts between 2004-2006. Summing up the results of the meeting, Aliev noted that republican law enforcement bodies are duty-bound to step up work, aimed at the earliest search for abducted people in Dagestan. He stressed their insufficient work in this sphere, pointed to the need for tough response by law enforcers and bodies of state power to every fact of abducting people in Dagestan. The republican leader noted that unsatisfactory exposure of such crimes is a serious problem, interfering with prevention of kidnappings.

Chechen history

Chechens one the worlds most ancient people

Chechens (self-assumed name " nokhchi" ) are the world" s most ancient people with unique anthropological type and culture. They are the largest ethnic group in the North Caucasus (more than 1 million people). The neighbouring Ingush people are very similar in genotype, culture and religion. Together they form the Vainakh people related by blood, common history, territorial, economic and cultural links and language. Vainakhs (Chechens, Ingushes) are aborigines of the Caucasus and speak Nakh, a language that belongs to the Iberian-Caucasian language family. The Vainakh (Chechen) ethnic and cultural complex was formed on the basis of various aboriginal people. Historically the Chechen community was formed as multi-ethnic and it kept absorbing ethnic elements of nomadic people and neighbouring high-landers, the evidence of which being the non-Vainakh origin of many Chechen clans. The history of Chechnya can be described as a continuing struggle for freedom and independence against outside enemies, in which periods of prosperity alternated with defeats and new attempts to revive the statehood. In the early Middle Ages (4th-12th centuries) Chechens had to take up arms to defend themselves against invaders from Rome, Sasanid Iran, Arab Caliphate and Khazar Kaganate. The centuries-long struggle forged a military union of highlanders and laid the foundation for their statehood.
