Modern Chechen literature

Chechen poetry of the 1920s and 1930s

During the late 1920s a number of Chechen scholars, among them Kh.Oshayev, were studying the political, religious and revolutionary aspects of Chechen history giving a strong boost to the budding Chechen literature. The poets were the first to respond. Poems about the historical past of the Chechen people first appeared in the late 1920s early-1930s, recreating the images of the heroes of old who once fought and suffered for the benefit of their people. In their poems M.Mamakayev (Bloody Mountains, 1928, and My Mothers Words, 1934), S.Baduyev (Partisans, 1934), A. Nazhayev (Shepherd, 1936) and others used the historical heroism of the Chechen folk songs in a bid to better understand the civic standpoint of their lyrical characters. The folklore thus became a much-needed stepping-stone on their way to creating Chechen national literature. The poets were writing easy-to-understand verse at a time when the process of Chechen enlightenment was only beginning to unfold.

Ethnic Russians in Chechen history

20th century Russia in the fledgling Chechen economy

As it came to the 20th century Chechnya was a backward territory on the outskirts of tsarist Russia. Its only industrial city Grozny was mainly populated by Russians. Grozny had a number of primitive oil refineries, small metal-working enterprises that served the oil industry and backyard-half turned enterprises of the food industry. Three Russian revolutions (1905-1917) brought closer the lives of Chechens, Ingushes and Russians. Poor mountaineers were attracted by the ideas of justice and freedom proclaimed by the Bolsheviks. Chechens and Ingushes demonstrated their active support for the revolutionary events. Reminiscent of class clashes on the territory of Chechnya was one of the biggest monuments in Grozny romantic revolutionaries: Russian Nikholai Gikalo, Ingush Gapur Akhriev and Chechen Aslanbek Sheripov. 31 January 2007 School is childrens second home
Children spend at school most of their time. Here they not only study but also develop their characters. They are getting used to a team-work and learn the necessary skills. What kind of life they are going to lead? To a great extent it depends on the teachers. As a rule, teachers are self-sacrificing people who are devoted to their work, but teaching is not enough because they must also bring up their pupils. To love children and believe in them is one of the ways to achieve any success in this respect. It is also important to let children express themselves creatively. Teachers of the Goragorskaya school 1 stick to this method of upbringing. This school is one of the oldest in the Nadterechny district - it was founded in 1952. In Soviet times, about 20 medalists graduated from this school practically each year. In the 90s the school was destroyed, but in 2002 it was restored. Its new life began with light classrooms, comfortable furniture and well equipped computer classes. The latter innovation made the pupils of the 11th form choose Information science as one of the disciplines to prepare for their graduate examination. Pupils may attend four hobby groups- The Vainakh ethics, Young naturalists, Chess players and Skilful hands. In autumn the school hosted the regional seminar on the problems of education and upbringing. Those attending it discussed the following issues: The house we live in, School- is our second home, Rules of the road, A newcomer, A citizen and citizenship. The latter was held in the 8th form as those pupils were going to receive their passports. To discuss the topic Battle of Ships, pupils built the models of ships Pearl and Orion. The boys wore sailors striped vests and the girls perfectly performed a song about foot wrap. Two teachers from the 1st Goragorskaya school, the laureates of The Teacher of the Year contest, gave lessons in Chechen, telling children about their native land, its customs and traditions. The pupils wore national clothes, sang and danced. Children tried to do their best to demonstrate their talents. All the participants of the seminar were very pleased with the forum. Our children do not draw war any more,- says Zara Zimayeva, head of the teaching department of the Goragorovskaya school, - they are optimistic about the future. They learn to be patriots, and they certainly will live interesting lives. They deserve it!

30 January 2007  Putin will hold 6th large press conference on February 1
President Vladimir Putin will hold his sixth press conference for Russian and foreign journalists at the Kremlin on February 1st. The first large meeting with pressmen was necessitated in 2001 by the huge number of news agencies and journalists, wishing to attend the conference and to interview the Russian leader. Personally, Putin regards such big press conferences as a good tradition, because they give him a chance to explain the key problems of domestic and international policy. Moreover, such large contacts help to save the presidents time. Meetings of this kind with journalists are now unofficially dubbed big annual press conferences. They sort of sum up the results of the previous political year. The president never limits the range of the questions put to him by journalists or the duration of the contacts with them. The questions usually touch on the most diverse problems of Russias domestic and external policy. They deal with the current information policy, freedom of speech, reforms in the Russian Armed Forces and in the countrys housing and communal system, taxes, economic strategy, situation in Chechnya, and also with the work done by the government and the State Duma. These meetings are always held in an easy atmosphere and the correspondents are given a unique opportunity to converse with the Russian leader for several hours running. No other foreign leader has ever allotted so much time to answer the questions of journalists. Itar-Tass

30 January 2007  Periodic clashes between gunmen and federal troops still disrupt Chechnya and nearby regions
Although the active phase of the North Caucasus antiterrorism campaign officially ended in 2001, periodic bombings and clashes between gunmen and federal troops still disrupt Chechnya and nearby regions, including Dagestan, Ingushetia, Kabardino-Balkaria, and Karachayevo-Circassia. A partial amnesty for militants not involved in major atrocities during Russia's antiterrorism campaign in the North Caucasus was announced by Russian authorities July 15, 2006, following the killing of the region's most sought after terrorist, Shamil Basayev. Colonel General Arkady Yedelev, a deputy interior minister, said on January 23 that 554 militants had given themselves up in the Republic of Chechnya since the amnesty announcement. But the commander of Russia's Joint Forces in the North Caucasus, Colonel General Yevgeny Baryayev, earlier said about 700 gunmen still continued to operate in Chechnya and neighboring regions.
