Chechen history

Event to be proud of

The first volume of the fundamental History of Chechnya has just been published in the republic. Movsur Ibragimov, minister of the national policy, press and information of Chechnya, doctor of history and one of the initiators of the publication offers the following comment. In the past, Chechen historians were often accused of their inability to create the history of the republic in a written form, though it is obvious to anyone that Chechnya does have its history. So far only several booklets and a number of articles were devoted to the subject in question, but there has not been any fundamental study of the history of Chechnya from time immemorial till these days. Two year ago an idea occurred to a group of historians and scientists to organize a special team of enthusiasts and specialists to start the work. Both the President of the republic and the Prime Minister favored and supported the idea. The fact is most gratifying because without their moral and even material support the idea would have never been realized. (more...)

Chechen residents buy most of the goods on the markets. The territorial department of Russias consumer goods supervision for Chechnya carries out quality control. It has conducted 674 checks up at markets, public catering facilities and enterprises that serve people and produce consumer goods and revealed about 600 violations. It removed from sale bad quality foods and expired goods and goods that had no quality certificates worth of over 190 thousand rubles. Over 1100 protocols received from police were examined and appropriate measures were taken. The department handed over documents concerning administrative offences to bailiff service. The documents are linked with failing to pay off 300 thousand ruble fines voluntarily. One of the most common violations is the absence of permissions, accompanying documents, licenses for one or the other work, certificates of conformity, sanitary passports for the facility, medical certificates of the working personnel and registered documents for the transportation of goods. 26 January 2007  Urus-Martan gets a new bridge
The residents of Urus-Martin got an unusual New Year present a new bridge over the Martanka River in the downtown of the city. The bridges built according to the latest modern technology. The bridge connects the two banks of the river without any additional bridge piers in the water. Its other most positive feature is that the bridge can stand any carrying capacity. The fact becomes much more important during any water overflows. The multi-lane bridge with wide pedestrians is located opposite the building of the city administration. Besides, it links several major highways. It means that from now on car drivers will be spending less time while moving from the southern regions of the republic to the northern ones. The bridge is 15 meters in width. Two more new similar bridges will be built in the region this year. One of them will be built in the outskirts of Urus-Martan, the other in the village of Martan-Chu . Both bridges are expected to make highroad service easier and more comfortable. Each new bridge will be 100 meters in length and will be abided to the latest safety norms.

25 January 2007  Court rejects Chechen's suit against Russian Defense Ministry
A Moscow district court Thursday rejected a suit against Russia's Defense Ministry by a Chechen man seeking compensation for injuries he allegedly sustained during a mopping-up operation in his village a year and a half ago. The Presnensky Court said the suit filed by Uzeir Abuliyev, a resident of the Chechen village of Borozdinovskaya, was not supported by any conclusive evidence that the June 2005 operation affected him personally. "The plaintiff's side produced no evidence of his mental or physical suffering. All the statements were groundless," said an official representing the Defense Ministry in court. Abuliyev's lawyer claimed the Defense Ministry troops who raided Borodzinovskaya in June 2005 "abducted and killed locals, torched four houses, and subjected all the community's male population to torture." He said his client had also been tortured and beaten up, and made to spend eight hours lying on the ground in heavy rain. The Defense Ministry submitted documents proving that Abuliyev reversed his earlier testimony about the cruel treatment he had allegedly suffered during the operation. Similar suits lodged by 41 other inhabitants of Borozdinovskaya will be considered in subsequent court hearings, each separately. Abuliyev said he would appeal. RIA Novosti
