Chechen traditions

"Nokhchallah," the chechen character

The word "Nokhchallah" does not lend itself to translation . But it may and must be explained. "Nokhcho" stands for Chechen."Nokhchallah" brings together all the specific properties of the Chechen character. It implies a whole gamut of moral and ethical norms. It may be described as the Chechen code of honor. Chivalry, gentility, diplomatic skills, manliness, generosity and reliability are the qualities which a child of a hardline Chechen family imbibes with, as they say, his mother's milk. And the Chechen code of honor is rooted in the remote days of Chechen history. In the severe conditions of bygone years a refusal to open the door to a stranger could lead to lethal frostbites. He could succumb to fatigue or famine, fall prey to a wild beast or highway robbers. The ancestral tradition which has been held sacred, demands that a stranger be welcomed in, seated by the fire, offered food and shelter for the night. Hospitality is, thus, "nokhchallah." The narrow roads and paths of Chechnya zigzag around mountain cliffs and on the brink of precipices. A fight or a heated argument may send one down into the abyss. Politeness and willingness to compromise are "nokhchallah." The strenuous conditions of their life taught the highlanders to help and support one another, which is also "nokhchallah." But "nokhchallah" has nothing to do with the Table of Ranks. There have been neither princes nor serfs among the Chechens.

Chechnya and chechens myths and reality

The myth on The white horse for hitler

Some Soviet historians, who made a career under Stalins regime, created and belabored the myth according to which Chechens not only supported Nazi Germany in World War Two but were even going to present Hitler with a white racing horse with a gold-plated saddle. This fiction, procreated, as we now know, by Stalinist propaganda to justify the ruthless deportation of the whole people, has long poisoned peoples lives. During the deportation, in the first winter alone more than a quarter of the republics population died from cold and deprivations. They were most older people and children. The fiction about supporting the fascists is easy enough to disprove. The fact is that not a single German soldier set foot on the territory of Chechnya-Ingushetia. The Germans advance was halted at Mozdok. Therefore, there can be no question about any support, conspiracy or assistance of the population to the Nazis. (more...)

17 January 2007  Eight militants surrender in Chechnya in 24 hours
Former members of illegal armed groups continue to return to peaceful life in Chechnya, even though the amnesty period offered to them has expired. Five ex-militants and collaborators have turned themselves in to police in the Groznensky district over the past 24 hours and three in other parts of Chechnya, Chechen Interior Ministry spokesman Magomed Deniyev told Interfax on Tuesday. Chechen Prime Minister Ramzan Kadyrov earlier told Interfax that, "explanatory work will be continued." According to the Criminal Code, citizens who lay down their arms voluntarily and who did not use weapons to commit crimes will not be prosecuted, he said. All those who wanted to surrender did so in the six months given to them, so few are expected to do the same now, said Kadyrov.

17 January 2007  Building Material Producing Factories in Chechen Villages
Mini-factories engaged in the building material production have been commissioned in several Chechen villages on the initiative of international medical corpus and in financial support of the European Commissions humanitarian aid bureau. Among these are: a brick-making factory in the village of Davydenko, a carpentry shop in Samashka, a factory for making pavement blocks other concrete items. With the commissioning of the brick-making factory reconstruction in the Achkhoi-Martan district has gained momentum. The factory makes quality bricks, and prices are reasonable. The carpentry shop produced 11 windows, 8 doors and other items in December alone. All products meet European quality standards. The shop has started to make Romanian-style furniture too. These mini-factories are now well-established, and there is a high demand for their products.
