A book about the republic library for children is published

This year the republic library for children marks its 60th anniversary. A special book devoted to the library was published in Chechnya. The author is Zulai Saidumova, director of the library. She is the Merited Worker of Culture of Chechnya and member of the board of directors of the Russian Fund for Children. The book tells readers the history of the library, presents unique archive documents and has a great number of photos. Zulai Saidumova has been working at the library for 35 years, that is why the book also brings her personal recollections about the history of the library. Founded in May 1946, the library got its republican status in 1958. During the first war operations the building of the library was burnt. The staff-members did their best to save at least some parts of the library collections, but in 1999 the building was completely destroyed. About 130 thousand books were lost finally and forever. And again the staff-members 11 people all in all - spared neither time nor efforts to revive the library. The library r5esumed working, though it is not easy, to put it mildly. To begin with, the library did not have its own building, so at first, it rented an office of the Republican Trade Union, then the library moved to the Republican Center of Culture. The team of the library is so enthusiastic that now the library is a leading one in Chechnya. Its educational and cultural projects, such as We Dream about Peaceful Life made it known and famous also throughout Russia. The library has a club for young writers and poets and a special fairytale room for small boys and girls. The library regularly holds meetings with famous authors from Chechnya and other parts of Russia and literary concerts. The Republican Library for Children also has close contacts with handicaps. At present, the library has 6 thousand books and unique technical equipment. The government of Chechnya finances the library.

The Invasion of Timur the Lame

The invasion of the Northern Caucasus by hordes of Timur the Lame, or as he is referred to in official sources Tamerlan, occurred as a result of wide-scale hostilities by Chagatai ruler against the Khan of the Golden Horde Tokhtamysh. Tamerlans army first crossed Chechen plains in March 1395. But in view of the further and more urgent need, namely, defeat of Tokhtamysh himself, his troops did not remain there long. After defeating his enemy on the Terek on April 15, 1395 , Tamerlan went on to attack Caucasian allies of the Golden Horde. After a series of ventures on the lands of western Adyghs on the territory of Karachayevo-Cherkessia, Kabardino- Balkaria and Norther Ossetia, Timur began preparing for his next invasion. This time the target of his march became the state of Simsim, located on the territory of Chechen and Ichkeria plains. The reason for his march, according to official contemporary sources, was Simsim rulers Gaukhan, (also known as Niyatkhan or Kyrbek) to recognize Tamerlans authority over him. In a longer term perspective, the march was part of the plan to destroy the Golden Hordes allied coalition, which took part in Tokhtamyshs raids on Central Asia. (more...)

On June 14, Kadyrov, the son of late Chechen president Akhmad Kadyrov, the Kremlin-backed leader credited with starting rebuilding work in the troubled region before his 2004 assassination, reported to the Chechen parliament on what had been done in the first 100 days of his premiership. "Each new facility commissioned in Chechnya gives people hope for the future, and helps a population torn by the war revive," Kadyrov said Monday. "Grozny is the heart of Chechnya, each street restored here is of huge significance for people." Speaking to a delegation of European diplomats June 2, Kadyrov suggested that the area could become a tourist destination in the future
