Fine Arts. The National Museum of Chechnya Is Being Revived

Vakha Astalov is the director of the National museum of Chechnya. He states with deep satisfaction that irrespective of all the problems and troubles the museum continues to function. At present the museum has 6 branches: Leo Tolstoys literary and ethnographical museum in the Starogladkovskaya village, Arbi Mamakayevs literary and memorial museum in the Nadterechny village, the Makhketinsky regional museum and a literary museum in the Paraboch village of the Shelkovskoi region (it was opened back in 2005). The Invasion of Timur the Lame

The invasion of the Northern Caucasus by hordes of Timur the Lame, or as he is referred to in official sources Tamerlan, occurred as a result of wide-scale hostilities by Chagatai ruler against the Khan of the Golden Horde Tokhtamysh. Tamerlans army first crossed Chechen plains in March 1395. But in view of the further and more urgent need, namely, defeat of Tokhtamysh himself, his troops did not remain there long. After defeating his enemy on the Terek on April 15, 1395 , Tamerlan went on to attack Caucasian allies of the Golden Horde. After a series of ventures on the lands of western Adyghs on the territory of Karachayevo-Cherkessia, Kabardino- Balkaria and Norther Ossetia, Timur began preparing for his next invasion. This time the target of his march became the state of Simsim, located on the territory of Chechen and Ichkeria plains. The reason for his march, according to official contemporary sources, was Simsim rulers Gaukhan, (also known as Niyatkhan or Kyrbek) to recognize Tamerlans authority over him. In a longer term perspective, the march was part of the plan to destroy the Golden Hordes allied coalition, which took part in Tokhtamyshs raids on Central Asia. (more...)

16 June 2006 Thousands of ex-gunmen joining federal forces - Chechen leader
Several thousand former Chechen gunmen have joined federal forces operating in the troubled North Caucasus republic, the region's president said Wednesday. Former Chechen President Akhmad Kadyrov declared an amnesty in late 2004 under his personal guarantee for Chechen militants who laid down their arms and withdrew from militant gangs. Local residents could also turn in their arms to police in exchange for financial compensation. "About 6,000-7,000 former militants are serving in the Defense Ministry, the Chechen Interior Ministry troops, working in the Chechen government and state agencies in the republic," said President Alu Alkhanov. "It is all thanks to the negotiating skills of the first Chechen president [Kadyrov]." Kadyrov's son, Ramzan, who is now Chechen prime minister, had also been involved in the disarmament effort. Alkhanov said the government was continuing to search for Shamil Basayev, Russia's most wanted gunman, who had claimed responsibility for a series of bloody attacks including the 1995 Budyonnovsk hospital siege. "We receive information about his changing whereabouts from special services and law-enforcement officers," Alkhanov said, without elaborating on when Basayev could be arrested. He said the number of wanted warlords had shrunk dramatically in the past few years.

16 June 2006  Grozny and Ulan-Ude have Signed Cooperation Agreement
Cooperation agreement was signed between Chechnya and Buryatia about a year ago. The first step toward realizing the agreement has been the visit to Grozny by a delegation from Buryatia led by the mayor of the capital, Ulan-Ude, Gennady Aidayev, when an agreement on sister-capital ties between Grozny and Ulan-Ude was signed. The agreement envisages cultural and youth affairs cooperation. Say, 25 children from Grozny will spend this summer holidays in a health resort on the bank of Lake Baikal. An invitation has gone out to a delegation from Grozny to visit Ulan-Ude this summer to see the international construction exhibition held by the Chinese province of Shenyan. China plans to start in Buryatia the production of cheap building materials and Buryatia may be able to help to build a bridge between Chechnya and China. Members of the Ulan-Ude delegation saw several objects in Grozny, and got acquainted with different aspects and stages of rebuilding. They also visited the Ministry education, where at that time 20 children from different regions of Chechnya were looking at 200 school childrens projects to pick the 20 best out of them. Gennady Aidayev liked the idea very much. The mayor of Ulan-Ude, an economic professor, member of the international engineering academy and of the Russian academy of the problems of security, defense and law and order, also met with students of the Chechen State University and told them about his regions youth policy. The students took keen interest in the meeting and requested that students be included in the Grozny delegation going to Ulan-Ude.
