A Triumph of the Chechen Actors at the Stage Without Borders Festival

Some time ago, the Stage Without Borders festival was held in Vladikankaz, capital the republic of Severnaya Osetiya-Alaniya. The festival is traditional - this year it was held for the third time. So far it has been the festival of the national theatres of the Northern Caucasus only, but this time drama theaters from Abkhaziya, Tadjikistan and Tatarstan also took part in it. The Chechen State drama theatres named after Khanpashi Nuradilov participated in the festival with great success. It performed Skapen, Save Love, a new stage production based on the work of the world - famous French author Jean-Baptist Moliere. Ruslan Khakishev, head of the theater, staged it. He is the Honorary Artist of the Russian Federation and a prominent Chechen theater director. Amran Jamayev, Peoples Artist of the Chechen republic and the republic of Severnaya Osetiya-Alaniya, played the role of Skapen. Peoples artists of the Chechen republic Sultan Dokayev, Khamid Azaeyv, Raisa Gichayeva participated in the performance along with young artists and new members of the troupe. Among them were Laura Amirkhanova, Aset Murtazaliyeva, etc. A group of theater critics from Moscow, who visited the festival, highly appraised professional skills of the actors from Chechnya. The Chechen State Drama Theater got two diplomats. One of them went to Aset Murtazaliyeva as the best second actress and the other was presented to the troupe for the best costumes, which were designed and created at the Mariinsky Opera and Ballet Theatre in St. Petersburg. Russlan Khakishev believes that the participation in the festival was of great importance to the Grozny State Drama Theater. The troupe had a unique opportunity to meet their colleagues, discuss problems of the further development of the regional drama theaters and even reach preliminary agreements on mutual tours. Ruslan Khakishev expressed hope that in the not too distant future theaters from various parts of the Russian Federation would be able to bring to Grozny their best stage productions. (more...)

Chechnya: news | arguments | facts

19 May 2006 Terek Lifts are Made in Chechnya
Industrial progress in Chechnya reached a landmark in April as the second batch of finished products left the Electropult-Grozny factory. Shortly the youngest enterprise in Chechnya will become the main supplier of medium and low voltage equipment, automatic control system and converter equipment to the entire Southern Federal District. Electropult-Grozny factory was established on January 20 this year and by March 20 the first batch of products left the factory for the Volokolamsk compressor station in the suburb of Moscow while the second batch went to St. Petersburg. The factory presently has a hundred members of staff who have been trained at the St. Petersburg headquarters of the factory. No fresh recruitment is being undertaken at the moment since the Grozny factory is yet to reach planned capacity and work is continuing on the building of production adjuster. In the next few years the staff numbers will be between 500 and 600 and production capacity will reach up to 1,5 billion rubles per year. Thirteen industrial enterprises in Chechnya are being rebuilt, 10 of which are production facilities. Five enterprises have already gone into production. They are, apart from Electropult, Transmash, Electro-repair plant, Experimental furniture factory and the Berkot garment-making factory. Lack of operating funds and small numbers of orders are the major problems of existing enterprises. Transmash is coping well with those problems and is already operating at full capacity. Items of Electro-repair plant are in high demand and it is also being helped by Sevkavelektromontazh of Rostov on Don. Experimental furniture factory is also not doing badly but the Berkot garment making plant is lagging behind. Under favorable conditions it could provide employment for 600 people but due to insufficient orders it is forced to remain idle periodically since its potential clients- interior, health, education and communal housing ministries order items from outside Chechnya, though products of the local plant are not inferior to imported ones. The industry and energy minister of Chechnya has said that government ministries and departments are bound to take the interest of local enterprises into account when ordering items on behalf of the government. That will help local enterprises to stand firmly on their feet quickly and will equally help to solve the acute problem of unemployment in Chechnya. The republic leadership pins hopes on private investments and quite recently talks were held in Grozny with officials of a German firm representing reputable investors and it was discovered that German businessmen want to set up in Chechnya medical instruments, glass, polymers producing factory as well as medium energy enterprises. A protocol of intent was later signed. There is also a good chance of cooperating with China. Chechen President Alu Alhanov was in the delegation that accompanied President Vladimir Putin during his March official visit to China and the agreements signed in Beijing have laid the basis for implementing a number of joint projects, one of which is the setting up in Chechnya of a wood processing factory. The Alhakalin wood processing plant now being restored will take active part in the deal with China and new ones will be built in Urus-Martan and Achxoi-Martan regions. Among the next plans of the Chechen energy ministry is the commissioning of the Grozny electromechanical factory, which will take place on June 4 to coincide with the hundred days in office as Chechen Prime minister by Ramzan Kadyrov. The lift producing factory is a joint venture with the Moscow Electrolift factory and the Grozny factory is the first in North Caucasus in the lift producing business.

18 May 2006  Chechen president dismisses rumors of conflict with PM
Chechen President Alu Alkhanov Thursday dismissed allegations of a growing conflict between him and the republic's prime minister. Media outlets had speculated that a rift was growing between Alukhanov and Kremlin-backed Prime Minister Ramzan Kadyrov - son of murdered former Chechen president Akhmed Kadyrov - and that the two held largely opposing views on the future of the republic. "I have normal relations [with Kadyrov]," Alukhanov said. "Both Kadyrov and I have enough brains and willpower to avoid letting the situation worsen, and we will not let anybody use us as a bulldozer." Alukhanov said the interests of the Chechen people were the priority for regional leaders. "Both the prime minister and I as president know what the people [of Chechnya] want," Alkhanov said, adding that the public interest was above any personal ambitions. "The most important task for the leadership of the Chechen Republic is to strengthen peace, to create and build," he said. "I bear full responsibility for everything that happens in the republic, but the power vertical and parallel should certainly be respected."
