06 May 2006 The Union of Writers of Chechnya: Its Present and Future Plans
Last May Eduard Mamakaev was elected head of the Union of writers of Chechnya. It is gratifying to state that favorable changes have taken place since that time as far as the functioning of the union is concerned. Eduard Mamakaev is absolutely sure the main reason is the stabilization of the situation in the republic in general. At present, there are 65 members of the Union of writers of Chechnya. Back in the 60th of the last century there were only 26 and in the 80th 32 members. At present, about 30 per cent of the members of the Union of writers of Chechnya are women. The other favorable fact is that the number of publications has increased as well. Just recently Ramzan Kadyrov, Prime Minister of Chechnya, met the board of directors of the union. They discussed the most burning problems of life in the republic, including the spread of drugs, smoking and drinking. The writers also spoke about the problems the union has been facing lately, including financial one. An agreement was reached to allocate 1,5 billion rubles to the union yearly. This sum is believed to be enough to pay salary to 8-9 staff-members of the union, to hold meetings with readers, the youth first and foremost. Soon, the union of writers of Chechnya will start publishing The Literary Gazette (Literaturnaya Gazeta). So far the newspaper has never been published in the republic. Besides, in the not too distant future the Union of writers of Chechnya will get back both and a few new cars and a building on Krasnye Frontoviki Street, which belonged to the union in soviet times. In June 2006, as soon as the union moves to the building, it will mark its 70th jubilee. Colleagues from all the republics of the North Caucasus and Moscow are expected to attend the jubilee events.

05 May 2006  Humanitarian Organization Doctors Without FrontiersProvides Sizable Aid to Chechnya
The humanitarian organization Doctors Without Frontiersopened its mission in the Southern Federal District in 1992. Its efforts continued unabated throughout the first Chechen war. But in 1997 it had to curtail its mission in the Chechen republic due to the abduction of its employee. Doctors Without Frontiers resumed its operation in Chechnya in 1999, but in 2002 they had to cut it short for more than 20 months over the abduction in Dagestan of the organizations chief Aryan Erkel. However, despite all those problems, Doctors Without Frontiers continued to dispatch free donations of medical supplies and equipment to over 30 Chechen hospitals and clinics. This international medical organization is primarily engaged in providing free medical humanitarian assistance to populations who suffered during hostilities. In the case of the Chechen Republic, such aid provided primarily to Chechen refugees who moved to Ingushetia. Doctors Without Frontiers also provided free assistance to Chechen and Ingush medical institutions, supplied medicines, equipment and helped with repairs. From 1999, this humanitarian organization implemented its own humanitarian projects in Ingushetia. In Chechnya itself they ran only a medical distribution program for medical facilities. In 2002, Doctors Without Frontiers began implementing a psychosocial program and beginning from 2004, after Aryan Erkels release, they began implementing other projects as well. Psychologists- consultants from this organization are also engaged in the reception of hospital 9 in Grozny. The organization helps this hospital with medical supplies and equipment for an emergency care unit, injury (trauma) ward, neuro surgery and takes care of local personnel training. From 2004 Doctors Without Frontiers have begun implementing a program of tuberculosis treatment in the tube outpatient clinics in Shali, Gudermess, Nadterechny and Shelkovskoi regions. Psychologists consultants advise patients of tuberculosis outpatient clinics and work on mobile teams in Grozny and Grozny rural region. Moreover, first aid is provided to Chechen residents who inhabit temporary residence centers. Employees of this organization hope to open shortly their outpost in Shelkovskoi region. Other projects are also envisaged, such as opening a reconstruction surgery ward at hospital 9 in Grozny. Doctors Without Frontiers are also engaged in personnel training activities in this ward. Doctors Without Frontiers are represented in Russia by three missions French, Belgian and Dutch. The French mission opened its office in Grozny in 2005, and the other two missions opened in 2004.
