Getting to Know Each Other Better

Late last month the Naur settlement in Chechnya hosted a republican festival of national cultural centers The Rainbow of Cultures. Taking part in the festival were childrens ensembles of the Nogai cultural center Ushkun, a joint Kumyk ethno-cultural center, a Russian national cultural center and Young Naur Cossacks ensemble. The festival was sponsored by the regional public organization Sozidaniye and the Center of Folk Creativity of the Chechen Republic. Ramzan Daudovdirector of that Center emphasized that at various times representatives of different peoples lived in friendship and accord and treated respectfully the culture, customs and languages of each other. Today, the Centers director noted , when our common adversaries attempt to sow grains of discord among them, we ought to show how important it is to live in peace and friendship. Chechen cuisine

Chechen cuisine

"The Chechens, like the rest of the highlanders, avoid extremes in their eating and drinking habits. What they usually eat is chureks or corn bread with mutton lard spread on it, and wheat stew with lard in it; water is their basic refreshment." "...Unleavend wheat or barley bread baked on charcoal, milk and cheese constitute their daily menu; meat is eaten, very rarely, by the richest of the Chechens." That was written about the Chechen eating habits in the 19th century. And it was not until the late 19th century that many vegetables grown in Europe - tomatoes, cabbage, radish - had found their way to the kitchen gardens of mountainous Chechnya. Chechen farming units have, since times immemorial, been self-sufficient, with only spices and sweetmeats being bought at the market. And, although they have become familiar with the cuisines of many other ethnic communities, the Chechen women cherish the very special culinary traditions of their own.

21 Mart 2006 Chechnya Joins the Nation-Wide Project "Agro-Industrial Complex Development
The rates of agricultural growth in Russia is 3-4 times lower than those showing growth in other sectors of the economy. The nation-wide project - "Agro-Industrial Complex Development was launched in the country in order to overcome this gap and raise the level of villagers' prosperity. And Chechnya has already joined the project. Close to 400 business plans have been prepared, which reflect national priorities -- acceleration of cattle-raising and support for small business in rural areas. The Chechen Agriculture Ministry explains that the project involves primarily financial support for small business in a broader sense -- from agricultural cooperatives and farming businesses to work on personal plots of land. The state is to recoup 95 percent of all expenses by individual farms on the interest of credits obtained from banks. The arrangement is as follows: the bigger the bank's credit, which is, sought for production development, the bigger the sum of government subsidy on interest payments toward the credit. The implementation of the nation-wide project -- "Agro-Industrial Complex Development" -- will help the republic to replenish cattle stocks on attractive terms and to acquire new equipment for dairy processing. Chechnya is also participant of the Federal rebuilding program -- "Social Development of the Countryside by the Year 2010". Four settlements will be supplied with gas under the program in Kurchaloi, Nozhai-Yurt and Shelkovskoi regions and a water supply system will be rebuilt in Alkhankala. 52.6 million rubles will be appropriated for these purposes from the 2006 budget of the Chechen Republic and another 100-120 million rubles will come from the federal budget.
