Getting to Know Each Other Better

Late last month the Naur settlement in Chechnya hosted a republican festival of national cultural centers The Rainbow of Cultures. Taking part in the festival were childrens ensembles of the Nogai cultural center Ushkun, a joint Kumyk ethno-cultural center, a Russian national cultural center and Young Naur Cossacks ensemble. The festival was sponsored by the regional public organization Sozidaniye and the Center of Folk Creativity of the Chechen Republic. Ramzan Daudovdirector of that Center emphasized that at various times representatives of different peoples lived in friendship and accord and treated respectfully the culture, customs and languages of each other. Today, the Centers director noted , when our common adversaries attempt to sow grains of discord among them, we ought to show how important it is to live in peace and friendship. About 100 participants of the festival displayed their talents before the spectators. Dancers took turns appearing on stage and songs in native languages rang out. "The Chechens, like the rest of the highlanders, avoid extremes in their eating and drinking habits. What they usually eat is chureks or corn bread with mutton lard spread on it, and wheat stew with lard in it; water is their basic refreshment." "...Unleavend wheat or barley bread baked on charcoal, milk and cheese constitute their daily menu; meat is eaten, very rarely, by the richest of the Chechens." That was written about the Chechen eating habits in the 19th century. And it was not until the late 19th century that many vegetables grown in Europe - tomatoes, cabbage, radish - had found their way to the kitchen gardens of mountainous Chechnya. Chechen farming units have, since times immemorial, been self-sufficient, with only spices and sweetmeats being bought at the market. And, although they have become familiar with the cuisines of many other ethnic communities, the Chechen women cherish the very special culinary traditions of their own.

A weapons cache was found at a city dump in Grozny's Staropromyslovsky district, a source in Chechnya's law enforcement told Interfax "It was a metal container filled with 20 projectiles for an anti- aircraft gun. The projectiles were removed to safe area and blown up.

13 Mart 2006  Over 7,000 Chechen militants have surrendered since 1999
Over 7,000 members of illegal armed groups have voluntarily laid down their arms since the beginning of the antiterrorist operation in Chechnya in 1999, Chechen Prime Minister Ramzan Kadyrov told journalists on Saturday. "We have managed to persuade over 7,000 militants to surrender voluntarily since the moment the armed actions began," he said.

13 Mart 2004  Terror attack prevented in Ingushetia
A terror attack has been prevented in Ingushetia's capital city Nazran. "Six 600-gram TNT blocks, six electric detonators and a box filled with 15 kilograms of shrapnel-packed explosives were discovered on the roadside on the outskirts of Nazran," a source in the republic's law enforcement told Interfax by telephone on Monday. A weapons and ammunition cache has been discovered in a forest outside the village of Inarki in Ingushetia's Malgobek district. The cache contained an antitank grenade launcher, 59 rounds for a shoulder-fired grenade launcher, 120 cartridges, 12 electric detonators and explosives equivalent to 1 kilogram of TNT, the source said.

The book "Vainakh Ethics" by Edi Isaev is an utmost important work at a time when the life in Chechnya is returning to normal. Edi Isaev is a historian, Professor at the Chechen State University, writer and publicist directs his book to youth. In introduction he emphasizes: "The norm of Vainakh ethics is the code of wise truths of people that reflects their ideals." The book is educational. It contains the ideas on ethics by thinkers of various people and various times from Epicurus and Confucius A.S. Makarenko and L.N.Toltoi. The second chapter is devoted to ethic norms of Chechens. The third chapter considers in detail traditional family ethic code. The final chapter is devoted to Islamic ethic norms. Materials from the book Vainakh Ethics by Edi Isaev is devoted to customs and traditions of Chechens.
