SITUATION IN BELARUS DISCUSSED IN US CONGRESS

The head of the US Helsinki Commission, Congressman Alcee L. Hastings has condemned the situation in Belarus in his speech in the House of Representatives on January 15. the politician informed about human rights violations in Belarus, arrests of oppositional leaders, disbanding of peaceful demonstrations and blocking of independent internet resources, Radio Svaboda and the Charter'97. "Last month, I chaired a Helsinki Commission briefing with a delegation of leading political opposition figures and democratic
activists from Belarus. Unfortunately, developments since the delegation's visit to Washington have been deeply discouraging and do not bode well for Belarus' democratic future. It is my strong hope that Mr. Lukashenka will cease the self-imposed isolation of his country," Alcee L. Hastings said.

PROTESTANTS AGAINST LUKAMOL

Heads of Protestants confession of Belarus signed an address to the head of the President's Administration and the Minister of Education, where they said about their concern that "administration of educational establishments makes students join public organisations, in particular the Belarusian Republican Pioneer Organisation (BRPO) and the Belarusian Republican Youth Union (BRSM, or colloquial Lukamol, similar to Komsomol in the USSR)."

Human rights organisation Freedom House published Freedom in the World report for 2008. According to the organisation, the number of the countries judged free stood at 90, representing 47 per cent of the countries of the world. Belarus, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan are named among the most repressing countries in the world.
