GEORGE BUSH: WE CANNOT TURN OUR BACK ON BELARUSIAN SOCIETY

"We cannot turn our backs on the Belarusian society, we cannot isolate these people. But the world cannot tolerate cruel violations of rights and freedoms in this country either, stated George Bush on Monday at a meeting with Lithuanian president Valdas Adamkus. During their meeting the two presidents have discussed issued of Transatlantic cooperation, situation in Iraq and Afghanistan, prospects of the Eastern Europe.

SEVERAL-KILOMETRE-LONG QUEUES AT RUSSIAN-BELARUSIAN BORDER

On Tuesday queues of cars gathered at Belarusian-Russian border. They extended over several kilometres, Interfax informs. Trucks and passenger cars are standing in a jam. At the moment the State customs committee is trying to find out the reason of the traffic jams. "According to preliminary information, the Russian side has returned to the procedure of cars' temporary admission," the committee told to the agency.

Representatives of the Belarusian Republican Youth Union held an action in Minsk on February 14. They exchanged badges in national red and white colours against red-green badges with official symbols. The BelaPAN has been informed about that by a witness of the action Natalya Shukhman.

POLICEMEN DETAIN YOUNG FRONT ACTIVISTS

A young activist Syarhei Lisichonak has been taken from his apartment for an interrogation by KGB officers. As the human rights center Viasna has been informed by the wife of the young activist, KGB officers arrived to their apartment and handed Syarhei Lisichonak a writ for an interrogation in a criminal case brought up against Young Front activists Zmitser Khvedaruk and Aleh Korban for "activities on behalf of an unregistered organization".

ZMITSER KHVEDARUK INTERROGATED IN KGB

KGB investigators have called in an activist of the Young Front Zmitser Khvedaruk (Fedaruk) for interrogation, Radio Svaboda informs. The Young Front activists do not rule out the possibility that the special services have summoned Khvedaruk for questioning intentionally to prevent one of the most active members from taking part in the street rally planned for St. Valentine's Day.

LITHUANIA SUGGESTS SUPPORT TO BELARUS IN OIL DELIVERIES

Lithuania suggests Belarus to use the Klaipeda oil terminal and Lithuanian railway as an alternative way for oil deliveries .As President of Lithuania Valdas Adamkus told the journalists in Washington during his official visit to the USA, the possibility of delivering oil to Klaipeda by sea, its discharging through the terminal and then its delivering to Belarus by the railway was discussed with Vice-President of the USA Richard Chainy and head of the ministry of energy of the USA Samuel Bodman.

KGB AGAINST ETERNALIZING MEMORY OF STALIN ERA REPRESSIONS VICTIMS AT STATE LEVEL

On February 13 the chairman of the KGB Stsyapan Sukharenka wrote a letter to the co-chairman of the committee on eternalizing memory of Stalin-era repressions' victims, Radzim Haretski that setting up such a committee at the national level is inadvisable, Radio Racyja informs. Sukharenka believes that establishing of a state committee on commemoration of Stalin era repressions' victims would require additional staff and expenditures for its logistical support, which is inexpedient at the present time.

DEMANDS OF FREEDOM TO BELARUSIAN POLITICAL PRISONERS HEARD IN WARSAW (PHOTO)

An action "Week of Solidarity with Political Prisoners in Belarus" continues in Warsaw. About a dozen of Belarusians who live in Warsaw gathered near the building of Belarusian embassy on February 13. They had white red-white flags, huge portraits of a political prisoner Alyaksandr Kazulin, and posters "Freedom to political prisoners!", "Lukashenka's power is illegal".
