The Chair of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe Rene van der Linden has arrived to Belarus on a visit today. The PACE Chair is visiting Minsk on invitation of the leadership of the "national assembly", the unrecognized Belarusian parliament. Exactly 10 years ago, on January 13, 1997, this body, which is completely dependent on Lukashenka, was deprived a status of a "specially invited"country in the PACE.

"PLOSCHA" IS A DOCUMENTARY ABOUT BELARUS' HEROES

"Ploscha", a new documentary of a famous director Yuri Khaschevatsky, can be now watched at the ploscha.wolnabialorus.org Internet site. The documentary runs about the events of March 2006 in Minsk when tens of thousands of people moved to the streets defending their choice and their country from the fraud and total lies during presidential elections. "A new force appeared in the country. That is the youth who possess other values, own world view and are not afraid to defend them," declared Yuri Khaschevatsky
when telling about his new documentary "Ploscha".

UTILITIES BILLS IN BELARUS GROWN

Since January 1 housing maintenance and utilities tariffs for citizens in Belarus have grown, told a deputy prime-minister Viktar Bura to journalists. According to information of Housing and utilities infrastructure Minister Uladzimir Belakhvostau, in line with the ruling of the government, utility rates for gas and electricity would grow by 20%, heating by 12%.

RUSSIA MAY IMPOSE RESTRICTIONS ON AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTS IMPORT FROM BELARUS

Russia may impose restrictions on agricultural products import from Belarus, if Minsk does not decrease subsidies to its agricultural producers and cancel discriminatory measures taken against Russian goods. That was reported yesterday by the minister of economic development and trade Herman Greff at the meeting with the Duma deputies.

Tomorrow Chairman of the Parliamentary Assembly of the European Union Mr. Van der Linden is going to make a pres-conference on the outcomes of his visit to Minsk. The press-conference of head of the PACE is to be held at the ministry for foreign affairs of the Republic of Belarus. Thus, the conference may be attended only by the journalists accredited at the ministry for foreign affairs. So the door will be open only to periodicals registered at the ministry of press.

The organizer of the presentation the Union (Zviaz) for Support of Democracy in Belarus assumes that the presented documentary will draw a more complete picture of the events in the neighboring country.

KGB CONTINUES PRESSURE ON BELARUSIAN YOUTH

On January 16 Vasil Lepesh got a call from a person who introduced himself as a representative of Minsk and Minsk region KGB department. He did not mention his name. The stranger invited Vasil to meet and talk in the center of the city. The KGB agent refused to tell the guy what would be the topic of their conversation. Vasil Lepesh replied, he would consult with the lawyer and think about the proposition. The KGB representative said, if Vasil decides not to come, he would be officially summoned to KGB.
