HUMAN RIGHTS ACTIVIST GOT SUMMONS

On January 24 journalist and human rights activist Natalia Kaliada got a summons
from the Central Court. The summons reads that Kaliada must come to the court
on February 2, at 3 pm. The trial case was launched on the basis of the decree
signed by the general prosecutor's assistant Kupriyanov. On January 28 the journalist
went through the documents on starting the administrative case on Article 167-10(activity
on behalf of non-registered political parties, trade unions or public associations).
Natalia Kaliada is accused of "the participation in organizing the activity"
of the civil initiative Charter97 site and monitoring of human rights' violations.
As far as monitoring is concerned, the office of public prosecutor did not like
such articles as "accidental arrests, detentions and exiles", "the rejection
of just court examination" and the list of those violating human rights.

RUSSIA CONTINUES GAS EXPORTS TO BELARUS

Russia continues gas exports to Belarus in full volume, the Itera company- Russia's
biggest independent gas exporter to Belarus, told Itar-Tass on Thursday. Gas
supplies to Belarus will not be cut short for a few more hours at least, the
company specified.

BELARUS' REPRESENTATIVES ON SADDAM HUSSEIN'S FAVORITES' LIST

Some Belarusians are on Saddam Hussein's favorites' list of those who got income
selling Iraqi oil. Iraqi newspaper "Al-Mada" published the list of the contracts
in contradiction with the UN resolution, as middlemen bought oil for the reduced
price and sold it later. Among those middlemen is the head of the President's
administration, two Belarusian political parties and three companies, as Radio
Freedom journalist Alyaksei Znatkevich reports.

BELARUSIAN MPS ARE NOT WELCOME IN PACE

On January 28 the issue of resuming Belarus in the status of a specially invited
to the PACE became the topic of discussion at the session of the political fractions
in Strasburg. On January 29 leaders of the fractions have to report their mind
to the Assembly Bureau. None of the most influential fractions, neither Socialist,
nor Christian Democratic, nor Liberal, supported the Belarusian Parliament's
request of the status recognition.

INDEPENDENT ASSOCIATION OF LEGAL INVESTIGATIONS LIQUIDATED

On January 29 judge Oksana Budovskaya satisfied the claim of the Justice Department,
saying that the Association has repeatedly violated the law "On public associations"
and its statute by protecting other public associations' interests at the Belarusian
courts. The independent barristers think that the organization has been liquidated
for the active protection of other public associations' interests.

COURT LAUNCHED "NARODNAYA VOLYA" CASE

Leniniski court of Minsk started the investigation on the claims from the founder
of "The Observer", OOO "Alliance-media", and the famous Belarusian businessman
Sergey Atroshenko against "Narodnaya Volya". The discussion on the claim is scheduled
for January 30.

WHERE WAS LUKASHENKA LAST DAYS?

According to the Austrian Foreign Ministry, the Belarusian leader was there on
a private visit in the last few days, so the date of his departure will be kept
in secret. However, the Foreign Ministry staff says that Alyaksandar Lukashenka
is going to come back to Austria again in February to do skiing. Alyaksandar
Lukashenka came to Krasnapolie only in 30 hours after the tragedy.

RUSSIAN MINISTER OF TRANSPORT: "CARRIERS TRY TO LEAVE BELARUS ASIDE"

A lot of carriers going from Western Europe to Russia back and forth try to leave
Belarus aside. This issue was discussed at the meeting of the coordinative committee
on forming and functioning of the transport system of the "union state" of Russia
and Belarus.
