ANOTHER MISFORTUNE OF "NARODNAYA VOLYA"

The famous manufacturer of lady's underwear Syarhei Atroschanka (a company "Serge")
does not give up his dream of becoming a media magnate, the Belarusian Business
Newspaper informs. While the newspapers are publishing as hot news or as a joke
the information that Atroschanka wants to buy shares of the English newspaper
"Daily Telegraph", Atroschanka has registered under his name the trade name more
famous in Belarus, The "Narodnaya Volya". And consequently demanded the editor-in-chief
of the "Narodnaya Volya", Iosif Syaredzich, to stop issuing the well-known independent
newspaper.

FOREIGNERS' ENTRY SIMPLIFIED SINCE JANUARY

Since January 1, 2004 the rules of entry for citizens of the European Union to
the territory of Belarus have been simplified. According to the decision of the
government of the country, in a one-sided order Belarus repeals the norm demanding
the dwellers of the Western Europe to have a special invitation a personal
or business one. Minsk reckons that Europe would answer with the same initiative.
At present to leave the country citizens of Belarus need a special permissive
record in a passport, which costs lots of money, as well as an obligatory invitation
from the receiving country, the Soyuz-Info' reports.

VALERY SHCHUKIN CELEBRATES NEW YEAR IN POLATSK RAILWAY STATION

The New Year-2004 the deputy of the 13th Supreme Soviet Valery Shchukin celebrated
in the Railway station in Polatsk. It was his 111th night in the railway station
after he was left without registration and thrown out from Polatsk hostel.

REPORT IN CHAMBER ALREADY

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has officially submitted a report of the deputy
of the Parliamentary Assembly of the European Council Christos Pourgourides to
the chamber of representatives "On the missing persons in Belarus", the newspaper
"Belarusskiy Rynok" (The Belarusian Market) informs. The official Minsk abstains
from comments.

ONE MORE PRISONER OF CONSCIENCE CAN APPEAR IN BELARUS

As the human rights center "Viasna" has find out, on January 17, 2004 in the
court of the Frunze district of Minsk, the session of the court on the case of
execution suspension of Aksana Novikava is to take place. Aksana Novikava was
sentenced for abuse of the president of Belarus to two years with suspension
of execution for two years. If the court would reverse a sentence of Aksana Novikava,
she could be imprisoned for two years. The reason for directing the case to the
court was numerous facts when Novikava had been taken to court for active social
and political dealings.
