Internal troops and police create obstacles to mourning action by
several hundreds of oppositionists
Yerevan, March 21. ArmInfo. Internal troops and police have fully
surrounded the Liberty Square in Yerevan trying to prevent several
hundred strong opposition action in commemoration for March 1
casualties.
Levon Ter-Petrosyan's supporters attempted to enter the Liberty
Square however the troops ousted them from the Square to the nearby
Tumanyan Street. The action consists mostly of women. Over 500
people participate in the action. Part of the participants managed to
leave lighted kindles in flowerbeds. Others carry posters of the
oppositionists arrested after the unrest of 1 March, including
portraits of the leaders of New Times and Armenian Pan National
Movement parties. At present, the oppositionists are pinning
mourning ribbons around the Sqaure. ArmInfo correspondent on the spot
reports that police try to lead journalists and participants in the
action to the Northern Avenue.
Yesterday in the evening the troops left the Liberty Square with the
expiry of the State of Emergency, however they again surrounded the
square today in the afternoon. At 3:50 police officers started
liquidating the mourning ribbons. The event has no organizers. The
participants told journalists they just want to pay homage to the
casualties of 1 March in Yerevan.
