The committee comprises the Public Association for Enlightening Young Reserve Servicemen, the Union of Great Patriotic War Veterans, the Union of Chernobyl Invalids. Speaking at a press-conference Tuesday the commissioners said that both the international and Hungarian laws oblige the world media to refrain from proclaiming Safarov a murderer. They condemned "Armenia's propaganda machine for yet another anti-Azeri show." They urged all the Azeris to stand up for Safarov and to help their compatriot out of trouble. The committee is going to recruit local international law experts for actively working with the international public opinion. In the end one of the commissioners urged the Azeri expecting a child to call their new born boys Ramil in honor of Safarov. A drive to increase pressure on a government accused of genocide during World War I will be launched on Thursday by Dafydd Iwan, president of the party of Wales Plaid Cymru. He will call on his own council, Gwynedd Council, to "recognise the reality of the Armenian genocide that took place under the Turkish government in 1915". ANUSHAVAN ARZUMANYAN's CORRESPONDENCE WITH HIS WIFE TO BE PUBLISHED MOSCOW, FEBRUARY 25. ARMINFO. The family of Academician Anushavan Arzumanyan, the founder of Moscow Institute of World Economy and International Relations, is preparing for publication the Academician's correspondence with his wife. In her interview to ARMINFO, Anushavan Arzumanyan's granddaughter Karine Arzumanian reported that the spouses' letters tell about the first chapters of the 2nd Armenian Republic, complicated relations between Bolsheviks and Dashnaks, the hard 1930s, impressions of their personal meetings with Stalin, Molotov, Orjonikidze. In 1921, Anushavan Arzumanyan and Gikho Shakhkamian, young people inspired by lofty ideas, were at the roots of formation of Soviet power in Armenia, advocating the new values. In 1937, Anushavan Arzumanyan was arrested. The Academician's granddaughter preserved a letter addressed by Gino Shakhkamian to Josef Stalin, in which she was justifying her husband, reminding the Generalissimo of his numerous services. Academician Arzumanian, who was Rector of Yerevan University and Prorector of Baku University, founded the Institute of World Economy and International Relations in Moscow in 1956. At a recent party marking the Academician's 100th birthday anniversary, which was held at the Armenian Embassy in Russia, Honorary Director of the Institute of the USA and Canada, Academician Georgy Arbatov pointed out that the foundations laid by Anushavan Arzumanyan allowed Soviet science to open up new horizons. "That was the reason for Soviet science to be internationally recognized,' Arbatov said. Unfortunately, that period is not reflected in the letters so vividly as the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s. The Academician's family hopes that the publication of the correspondence will make the readers take a new view of recent history. CALIFORNIA DEMOCRAT AND CONGRESSIONAL ARMENIAN CAUCUS CO-CHAIRS CONDEMN VICIOUS MURDER OF ARMENIAN SOLDIER BY HIS AZERBAIJANI COLLEAGUE AT NATO SPONSORED EDUCATION PROGRAM WASHINGTON, DC, FEBRURY 25. ARMINFO. California Democrat Adam Schiff and Congressional Armenian Caucus Co- chairs Joe Knollenberg (R-MI) and Frank Pallone (D-NJ) condemned the vicious murder of an Armenian soldier by his Azerbaijani colleague at a NATO sponsored education program in Hungary last week, reported the Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA). "I was shocked and saddened to hear of the Armenian soldier's horrific murder in Hungary," stated Rep. Schiff, in a statement submitted to the ANCA yesterday. "While we do not yet know all of the circumstances of the soldier's tragic death, this incident reinforces the need for Azerbaijan to end its propaganda regarding Nagorno Karabagh and reach a negotiated settlement of the Karabagh issue. Regrettably, the Administration has requested 4 times more military assistance for Azerbaijan than Armenia. I hope Congress will step in and correct this funding injustice against Armenia, one of America's strongest allies in the region." Rep. Pallone echoed similar concerns, stating that, "this unfortunate tragedy shows how dangerous Azerbaijan's war propaganda can be not only in Azerbaijan but around the region. It's time the Azerbaijani government reject shocking propaganda that does nothing more than reignite xenophobia and extremism." Rep. Knollenberg noted that, "I am deeply saddened by the horrific murder of Lt. Gurgen Markarian. It is a tragedy that the Partnership for Peace program has been marred by this murder. I expect nothing less than a full investigation and complete justice for those responsible." "The brutal murder of the Lt. Gurgen Markarian by his Azerbaijani counterpart has drawn the attention of the international community to the growing anti-Armenian sentiment being fostered by the Azerbaijani government, as well as its ongoing obstruction of the Nagorno Karabagh peace process and efforts to exclude Armenia from NATO exercises," explained ANCA Executive Director Aram Hamparian. "The Azerbaijani government's violent rhetoric, its destabilizing actions, and the very real human costs of their decisions need to be addressed immediately and decisively by the U.S. government and the international community before this tragedy is repeated on a larger scale." Lt. Gurgen Markarian was brutally axed and stabbed to death last Thursday by Azerbaijani Lt. Ramil Safarov during a NATO language- training seminar in Hungary. Hungarian officials have arrested Safarov and are continuing their investigation in the matter. Following the slaying, the Armenian Foreign Ministry issued a statement saying the killing in Hungary was "the logical consequence of anti- Armenian hysteria that has been left unreined by the Azeri authorities over the years and of (Azerbaijan's) war- mongering, militarist propaganda." NATO officials characterized the incident as a clear criminal act on Friday and, according to the RFE/RL report on the topic, expressed it hopes the tragic incident will not affect Armenia's "strong participation" in NATO's Partnership for Peace program.
