PROBLEM OF BOTULISM SERUM REMAINS UNSOLVED

YEREVAN, JANUARY 21. ARMINFO. A patient died from an intestinal infection at the Resuscitation Department of the Republican Medical Center last night, Head of the Department Suren Margarian told ARMINFO.

He reported that six botulism patients have been admitted to the Department during the last two days, their state being considered grave. All the patients are from Armenia's regions, Ararat, Aragatsotn and Armavir. Margarian pointed out that the cases of poisoning from preserves have been decreasing during the last five years, but 10 cases have been recorded since the beginning of 2004. According to him, during one year the number patients in the hospital has not exceeded 25, but the new figures inspire pessimism. Margarian pointed out the doctors still have a deficit of botulism serum, the cost of one dose being 20 USD. Each patients needs two doses a day, and not all patients are able to pay such money. Margarian said that the hospital needs 50 doses daily, but it can get only 10. "In fact, the patients' life depends on the serum," he said.

Now the medical staff of the "Nork" isolation hospital is fighting for the life of a 12-year-old boy infected with botulism. Head Physician Ara Asoyan confirmed that the number of infections has lately considerably increased. He urged the population ot use preserves with caution.

ARMENTEL PREVENTS INTERNET DEVELOPMENT IN ARMENIA: ARMINCO DIRECTOR

YEREVAN, JANUARY 21. ARMINFO. The ArmenTel telecom company is doing its best to prevent internet development in Armenia, the director of the biggest Armenian internet provider Arminco Andranik Aleksanyan told ARMINFO.

ArmenTel's "expensive internet" policy impedes the development of the web in Armenia. Nevertheless, ArmenTel cannot stop the flow of internet users whose number grew by 2,000 last year, the average annual growth making 5%.

Concerning the number of .am domains, Aleksanyan said that it is growing slowing but steadily. Last month there were 3,300 .am domains, 1,500 of them active. The rest were inoperative for different reasons. "Most of the Armenian domains have no 'transport' and simply can't work."

Asked why one cannot find some domains by search, Aleksanyan said that big searchers like Google.com, Yahoo.com or Yandex.ru search out more active sites through internet providers checking up which of the sites are active for longer periods and how often they are updated. "These searchers contain almost 15 bln domains all over the world and small Armenia simply can't compete with the leaders in the sphere."

Concerning the prospects of iternet development in the context of the recent enforcement of the Law "On E-Document and Digital Signature," Aleksanyan said that some aspects will be simplified others complicated. "Lots of incompetent people are always there to hinder innovations. One should first teach people how to use this type of service and only then introduce it." "In order to ensure the law's efficiency one should first carry out several educational programs to teach people how to defend themselves from hacking. Only then will the project be as effective as in developed countries," Aleksanyan said.

LAST TRAM PUT OUT OF OPERATION IN YEREVAN

YEREVAN, JANUARY 21. ARMINFO. The last tram was put out of operation in Yerevan today.

Head of the Transport Department of Yerevan Municipality Areg Barseghyan told ARMINFO that the tram's exploitation cost the Municipality 2.4 time more than the proceeds from it. He said that the transportation by the tram totaled 1%, playing no essential role in Yerevan. The tram's putting out of operation did not lead to crowds in its route Zeitun-Charbakh, other types of transport operate in this direction.

Barseghyan said that the tram transportation was stopped in conformity with resolutions of seismologists who say that trams overload the Kiev bridge. Besides, the Municipality recommended the Transport Department to fully repair the route of the tram No5 and all the trams of this route, but the department has no necessary funds. Head of the Transport Department said that the given electric transport has no electricity debts.

Another type of electric transport is trolleybus that operates with loss as well. Barseghyan said that the competitiveness of this type of transport with any other one is too low, but the issue of trolleybuses' putting out of exploitation has not been considered yet.
