ARMENIAN FM REFUTES INFORMATION OF AZERI "ORGANIZATION OF KARABAKH'S LIBERATION" THAT GROUP OF IRAQI ARMENIANS ARRIVED IN STEPANAKERT

MARCH 27. The Amenian Foreign Ministry refutes the information of the Azeri "Organization of Karabakh's Liberation" that a group of Iraqi Armenians arrived in Stepanakert.

Press Secretary of the Armenian Foreign Ministry Dzyunik Aghajanyan informed ARMINFO that the information spread by this organization is groundless. From the beginning of military actions in Iraq, no families of Armenians have arrived in Armenia so far, and speaking of their arrival in Karabakh not serious, she said.-

EMERGENCE OF SUCH COUNTRY AS KURDISTAN CAN RADICALLY CHANGE GEOPOLITICAL PICTURE OF REGION

MARCH 27. The emergence of such a country as Kurdistan can radically change the geopolitical picture of the region, Russian politologist Andranik Mihranyan told ARMINFO's correspondent.

He said it threatens the destabilization of the situation in the neighboring Iran, which is not in Armenia's favor. At the same time, the cooperation of the USA and Kurds is possible in this case. Besides, the stationing of military bases in Kurdistan will weaken Turkey's position in the region and increase the pressure on it when solving the problems with its neighbors and Europe, which will result in official Ankara's agreeing to settle a complex of problems with Armenia.-

TURKEY'S GEO-POLITICAL WEAKENING ADVANTAGEOUS FOR ARMENIA

MARCH 27. Turkey's geo-political weakening because of the Iraqi war is advantageous for Armenia in terms of solving its own problems, the well-known Russian politologist Andranik Mihranyan said in Yerevan today.

The most interesting result of the war is that for the first time Turkey has sustained a serious defeat as the US was forced to reconsider the importance of that country's geo-political position in terms of its own strategical interests.

"For the first time after the WW II Turkey has shown that it is not the most reliable ally of the US." This fact has created opportunities for the deepening of Armenian-American and Armenian- European relations.

For this very reason, according to Mihranyan, the ISTJ's recent report on the Armenian Genocide coincided with the current development of Turkish-American relations. "The West has stopped considering Turkey a factor, whose interests must be protected irrespective of such key issues as the Armenian Genocide, the Cyprian problem and Turkey's relations with Greece."

Of course, one can give this all an optimistic view, unless the Turkish military bring the politicians back to their senses explaining to them that their current position may lead to heavy political complications.-

ARMENIAN "TRADITIONAL" COMMUNISTS DISSATISFIED WITH BEHAVIOR OF THEIR "REGENERATED" COLLEAGUES

MARCH 27. Armenia's "traditional" communists are dissatisfied with the behavior of their "regenerated" colleagues, Second Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Armenia Sanatruk Sahakian reported during a picket in front of the US Embassy in Yerevan.

According to him, the Regenerated Party of Armenia (RPA) is nothing but a daw in peacock's feathers. Sahkian pointed out that the RPA has nothing of Communism in it but the name. "If any doubts about it existed on the threshold of the presidential election, they were dispelled during the election," Sahakian.

We would remind you that during the presidential election the RCP supported the incumbent President, whereas the CPA took the opposition's side.

CPA ORGANIZES PICKET IN FRONT OF US EMBASSY

MARCH 27. The Communist Party of Armenia (CPA) has organized an action of protest in front of the US Embassy in Yerevan.

Second Secretary of the CPA Central Committee Sanatruk Sahakian stated that the action is an expression of the will of not only of the CPA, but also of the entire Armenian nation. He pointed out that "it is not the first time that the USA acts as aggressor, each time remaining unpunished." According to Sahakian, this "impunity" allows the USA administration not to observe the UN requirements and take into account the will of millions of people from all the parts of the world, who demand termination of hostilities in Iraq and withdrawal of the US troops from that country. The demonstrators demanded closure of the US Embassy in Armenia, as "we do not want here a mission of a country implementing such a policy."

Responding to the journalists' questions on his expectations of results of the action of protest, Sahakian pointed out that it would be naive to expect any serious results. According to Sahakian, this is an action of solidarity with the Iraqi people and does not mean support of Saddam Husein's regime. Sahakian said that the Iraqi people has the right to choose its leaders. He also pointed out that the demonstrator will not picket the British Embassy, as Great Britain is only "subservient" to the USA. The picket was attended by some 1,000 people.

DIRECTOR GENERAL OF ARAM KHACHATRYAN CONCERT HALL OF PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA OF ARMENIA NIKA BABAYAN SENDS IN HIS RESIGNATION

MARCH 27. Director General of Aram Khachatryan Concert Hall of the Philharmonic Orchestra of Armenia Nika Babayan has sent in his resignation, says an open letter of the leadership of the Philharmonic Orchestra addressed to the Armenian Minister of Culture for Youth and Sports Affairs Rolan Sharoyan and to Head of the All Armenian Charity Union Office Ashot Ghazaryan.

The reason for Nika Babayan's resignation was the current conditions contradicting to his professional principles, the letter says. The authors of the letter were especially dissatisfied with the behavior of the conductor Eduard Topchyan who tried to create a distorted impression of the situation in the eyes of the public. According to the source, the conductor has left his direct duties and is currently engaged in revealing organizational and financial violations. "Either violations are out of the question, as all the activities of Director General Babayan are controlled by Head of the All Armenian Charity Union Office Ashot Ghazaryan," the letter says. In conditions of the current situation, Head of the Public Relations Department Narek Tovmasyan, Head of the Development and Programs Department Anaida Ghazaryan, Advertising Manager Marina Sultanyan, Editor Liana Sargssyan and the employees of the Computer Design Department Armen Patvakanyan and Yelena Abrahamyan also decided to send in their resignation.

ORPHANS' FOOTBALL FUN DAY ON MARCH 29 IN YEREVAN

MARCH 27. British Council Armenia is holding an Orphans Football Fun Day on 29 March 2003, to coincide with the Armenia - Northern Ireland 2004 European Championship qualifier: young Armenian orphans will play a friendly match with Northern Ireland Supporters' Club members, as well as present Northern Ireland and Armenia players with flowers, take pictures, and have their shirts and footballs signed. The aim is to foster social inclusion of an underprivileged part of the population. The British Council Press Service informed ARMINFO.

On Saturday afternoon, 29 March, along with the British Council, Northern Ireland Supporters will visit Zatik orphanage, where they will have lunch with the children and present them with a donation. British Council staff will then give them football shirts, shorts, and boots. At 14:00 the Northern Ireland Supporters will play two friendly games against 25 of the children in Skiff field, and then go on to the actual match.

Northern Ireland Supporter's Clubs (NISC) organized wonderful fundraising activities. Black Dog NISC ran an event called "Night at the Races" in a local bar in Belfast. Another Northern, Hillsborough NISC, organised a sponsored walk to climb Slieve Donard, the highest "mountain" in Northern Ireland (approximately 870 m).

This Football Fun Day initiative was brought about by Arlex International's Christmas Wish List 2002 web pages (www.arlex.am/wishlist/) which present the stories of six local, nonprofit organizations of superior quality that are dedicated to bringing renewal to Armenia all year round. These web pages, put together by an Armenian Volunteer Corps volunteer, enabled the Northern Ireland Football Supporters to see what charities and institutions they would be able to support in Armenia.

A further fundraising effort was organised by Our Wee Country, a supporters club that produces a Northern Ireland fanzine and manages the web site. OWC held an on-line auction of donated items such as signed footballs, signed football jerseys and so on. The supporters also organised a clothes and toys collection. Other supporters clubs involved were Lower Shankill NISC, 1st Shankill NISC, and Armagh City NISC. A local Post Office helped transport items to the airport. IFA players Steven Craigan and Steve Jones made their contributions as well. As the Northern Ireland Supporters said, ": the point is to do something, no matter how small, for people less fortunate than ourselves". The British Council connects people worldwide with learning opportunities and creative ideas from the UK and builds lasting relationships between the UK and other countries.
