ARMENIA'S PRESIDENT MEETS HIS SLOVAK COUNTERPART

FEBRUARY 25. Armenia's President Robert Kocharyan met today with Slovakia's President Rudolf Schuster within the framework of his official visit to that country, ARMINFO was told at the presidential press service. The presidents gave a press-conference after their meeting. The same day Kocharyan met with Speaker of Slovakia's Parliament Joseph Miglash and Prime Minister Mikolas Dzerinda. Kocharyan also took place in a ceremony of "Friendship Tree" planting.

MICROSOFT RESEARCH EMPLOYEE OF ARMENIAN ORIGIN TOPS LIST OF RUSSIAN I.T. VIPs

FEBRUARY 25.T Igor Aghamirzyan, the head of Microsoft Research's department for relations with East European research institutions, has topped the list of 100 IT VIPs of Russia. Another Armenian Boris Babayan, chairing the board of directors of Elbrus Technologies, occupied the 7th place. The list was made by the Kommersant publishing house, the TranceLite Promotion company and the Association of Managers of Russia together with coprorative IT companies, participants of Russia's IT market and their clients.

SERCRETARY OF GEORGIA'S NATIONAL SECURITY COUNCIL KILLS HIMSELF

FEBRUARY 25. The 60-year old Secretary of Georgia's National Security Council Nugzar Sajaya shot himself in the month in his office today and died several minutes later in a hospital. He has been holding the post since 1995. No official comments have been made so far. The country's Prosecutor General's Office has initiated a criminal case. To recap, last week Sajaya and Head of the State Investigation Department Awtandil Ioseliani were accused of orchestrating crimes like the murder of ex president Zviad Gamsakhurdia and political figure Georgy Chanturia as well as of framing up the case of a failed assassination attempt on the incumbent president, Sajaya qualified these charges as a moral terror against him and asked the prosecutor general to officially investigate into them.

LEADER OF POLISH JEWS SLATES ISRAEL FOR REFUSAL TO ACKNOWLEDGE ARMENIAN GENOCIDE

FEBRUARY 25. The leader of Poland's Jewish community, Konstanty Gebert, has come up with severe criticism of Israel's refusal to acknowledge the Armenian Genocide. One of the best journalists of Poland, Gebert, has appeared with an article in a local daily, calling the refusal a disgrace. He reminded of Hitler's words about the Armenian Genocide. He said as far as Turkey is concerned Hitler is right even today. He said all the Jews must remember what a cost was paid for short memory. Gebert notes that though Israel is struggling to survive in the Middle East and Turkey is its most serious ally, it still has no right to make false statements. To recap, the Israeli ambassador to Armenia said no parallels should be drawn between the Armenian Genocide and the Holocaust. He concludes that Tel Aviv has no right to accept the Turkish scenario of the Armenian Genocide, noting that all crimes against humanity have their moral consequences.

NIKOL PASHINIAN PROSECUTED AGAIN

FEBRUARY 25. Criminal proceedings were initiated against Editor-in-Chief of the "Haikakan Zhamanak" (The Armenian Time) newspaper Nikol Pashinian, Chief Assistant to the Prosecutor of the Center and Nork-Marash districts Sergey Abrahamian told ARMINFO. According to him, the criminal proceedings were initiated on Article 132 of the Criminal Code (affront). The reason for Pashinian's prosecution was a complaint lodged by Head of the Civil Aviation Department of Armenia Hovhannes Yeritsian, who demanded that the Prosecutor's Office initiate criminal proceedings for the article entitled "Now look!" in the issue of November 6, 2001. Today Nikol Pashinian was released on his own recognizance. Nikol Pashinian can be sentenced to one year of imprisonment or to one year of corrective labor or to a penalty equal to 20-30 minimum monthly wages. Talking to ARMINFO, Pashinian regards the criminal action against him as the authorities' attempt to restrict the press's activities to their own frames. It is not the first time that Pashinian is being prosecuted: in February 2000, he was sentenced to one year of conditional imprisonment for official neglect and affront.

WELL-KNOWN ARMENIAN CONDUCTOR TO FEATURE FRENCH MUSIC IN MOSCOW

FEBRUARY 25. Well-known French conductor of Armenian origin Ohan Duryan is to give a series of concerts in Moscow featuring composers like Moris Ravel, Clode Debussy and Camil Sent-Sans. According to Russia media, the concerts are organized by the Center of Stas Namin. Duryan is a very experienced conductor. He has conducted over than 100 orchestras worldwide. His debut was highly evaluated by Herbert von Karayan himself.
