LEADER OF POLISH JEWS SLATES ISRAEL FOR REFUSAL TO ACKNOWLEDGE
ARMENIAN GENOCIDE
FEBRUARY 25. The leader of Poland's Jewish community, Konstanty Gebert, has come up with severe criticism of Israel's refusal to acknowledge the Armenian Genocide. One of the best journalists of Poland, Gebert, has appeared with an article in a local daily, calling the refusal a disgrace. He reminded of Hitler's words about the Armenian Genocide. He said as far as Turkey is concerned Hitler is right even today. He said all the Jews must remember what a cost was paid for short memory. Gebert notes that though Israel is struggling to survive in the Middle East and Turkey is its most serious ally, it still has no right to make false statements. To recap, the Israeli ambassador to Armenia said no parallels should be drawn between the Armenian Genocide and the Holocaust. He concludes that Tel Aviv has no right to accept the Turkish scenario of the Armenian Genocide, noting that all crimes against humanity have their moral consequences. Criminal proceedings were initiated against Editor-in-Chief of the "Haikakan Zhamanak" (The Armenian Time) newspaper Nikol Pashinian, Chief Assistant to the Prosecutor of the Center and Nork-Marash districts Sergey Abrahamian told ARMINFO. According to him, the criminal proceedings were initiated on Article 132 of the Criminal Code (affront). The reason for Pashinian's prosecution was a complaint lodged by Head of the Civil Aviation Department of Armenia Hovhannes Yeritsian, who demanded that the Prosecutor's Office initiate criminal proceedings for the article entitled "Now look!" in the issue of November 6, 2001. Today Nikol Pashinian was released on his own recognizance. Nikol Pashinian can be sentenced to one year of imprisonment or to one year of corrective labor or to a penalty equal to 20-30 minimum monthly wages. Talking to ARMINFO, Pashinian regards the criminal action against him as the authorities' attempt to restrict the press's activities to their own frames. It is not the first time that Pashinian is being prosecuted: in February 2000, he was sentenced to one year of conditional imprisonment for official neglect and affront.
