FIRST RUSSIAN-LANGUAGE STUDENT'S NEWSPAPER WAS PUBLISHED IN ARMENIA
FEBRUARY 22. The first Russian-language newspaper
"Glagol" was published in Armenia. It has been created by efforts of
the students of the faculty of Russian language and philology of the
Yerevan state university. As the dean of the faculty Karen Mkrtchian
stated during the newspaper's presentation, the newspaper will become
one of symbols of centuries-old Russian-Armenian friendship.
Representatives of Russia's Embassy in Armenia, rectos of other
Armenian higher education institutes also took part at the
presentation. In his message, directed to the editorial staff of the
"Glagol", Russia's Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to
Armenia Anatoly Drukov pointed out that he considers the appearance
of the newspaper very important event, which oversteps the limits of
the university life.
The newspaper "Glagol" is a monthly. The editorial staff of the
newspaper consists of students of the faculty of Russian language and
literature of the Yerevan state university. The newspaper is
published by support of the former graduating student, and now an
entrepreneur Irina Kocharian - the niece of Armenia's President.
AZERBAIJANI PRESIDENT, US VICE-PRESIDENT EXCHANGE VIEWS ON KARABAKH
SETTLEMENT
FEBRUARY 22. During their telephone
conversation, Azerbaijani President Heydar Aliyev and US
Vice-President Dick Chainy exchanged views on the settlement of the
Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
According to the press service of the Azerbaijani president, making a
positive assessment of the USA's role in the Karabakh settlement,
Aliyev stressed that the solution to the problem as soon as possible
would provide ample opportunities for strategic cooperation between
Baku and Washington. Agreeing with President Aliyev, Chainy assured
him that Washington will render its assistance in the settlement of
the Karabakh conflict in the future as well.
YEREVAN'S CASHOMATS OF ARCA SYSTEM DISCONNECTED
FEBRUARY 22.All the cashomats and a number of
POS-terminals, which serve the ArCa plastic cards of the Universal
Payment System of Armenia, were disconnected yesterday because of the
damage of the telephone cable of AXT 44. The "ArmenTel" company
immediately began repair and intends to restore the communication
within 2 days.
Four cashomats and 96 POS-terminals in Yerevan are currently
operating. According to the information reported to ARMINFO by the
banks owning cashomats, 66% of ArCa cards are served monthly by the
cashomat of "Armeconombank", 10% by the cashomat of "Ardshinbank"
and 24% by the cashomat of "Armimpexbank." As regards the "Credit
Yerevan" bank, it has put its own cashomat into service this month.
Last December "Credit-Yerevan" suspended operations as a result of
financial embarrassment. But the appointment of temporary
administration, which launched a financial recovery program in
January, allowed the bank to start serving ArCa-card holders.
According to preliminary data, the cashomat of the "Credit Yerevan"
bank is to serve 5%-7% of cards monthly.
ARMENIA MAY REACH 30% ECONOMIC GROWTH
FEBRUARY 22. Armenia will reach 30% economic growth
if Turkey lifts the blockade. The chairman of the Central Bank of
Armenia Tigran Sargsian stated in the interview to the Public TV of
Armenia, commenting on the work of the London forum.
According to him, during the forum a special attention was drawn to
the situation connected with debt liabilities before the low-income
countries of CIS. Sargsian pointed out that Armenia among them is in
more favorable situation, as the debt burden of the republic is the
lightest. "Armenia will not have problems with security for foreign
debt, if a stable economic growth were ensured in the nearest few
years", the chairman of Armenia's Central Bank stated. The
pessimistic scenarios, in the framework of which the restructuring of
the foreign debt is predicted, has been also considered during the
forum.
Sargsian said that issue of strategy of poverty reduction of the
region's country, the system of state government, social reforms,
investment environment, financial reforms were discussed at the
forum. According to him, reforms of the energetic sector were also
examined in the framework of the forum. In particular, the
participants of the forum touched upon the issues of raising prices
of energy sources and neutralization of the origin of social strain
connected with that.
