FM URGES POPULATION NOT TO "BE FILLED WITH" HATE FOR JEWISH PEOPLE

FEBRUARY 20. Armenian Foreign Minister Vardan Oskanian urges Armenia's population not to be "filled with hate" for the Jewish people because of Israel's denying the Armenian Genocide. At his meeting with students of State University of Foreign Languages, Oskanian stated that official Tel Aviv's position does not reflect the opinion of the Jewish people. Many Jewish scholars made their contribution to proving the fact of the Armenian Genocide in Ottoman Turkey in 1915, the minister said. "At the same time, it huts us that the authorities representing a people which experienced so much in getting its Genocide recognized resorted to such a step," the minister said. Oskanian expressed confidence that Israel's official authorities will reconsider their position under the people's pressure. The Armenian foreign minister also stated that Yerevan does not intend to declare Israeli Ambassador to Armenia Rivka Coen a persona non grata. Earlier, at her news conference in Yerevan, Rivka Coen stated that it is inadmissible to draw parallels between the "tragedy of the Armenian people" and the Jewish Holocaust. The Armenian Foreign Office presented a note of protest, which pointed out the inadmissibility of belittling the memory of the victims of the Armenian Genocide. "As Jews and as Israelis we are grieved by this tragedy. We know that very many Armenians fell victim to it. This problem must be studied thoroughly with the involvement of the wide public," the Israeli Foreign Ministry says. At the same time, the message notes that Israel and Turkey have good relations. To recap, Armenia's Foreign Ministry sent a note of protest to its Israeli colleagues following the statement by Israeli Ambassador to Amenia Rivka Kohen that no parallels must be drawn between the Armenian Genocide and the Holocaust.
