SWISS DOCTORS TO HOLD SEMINARS ON WELL-BALANCED DIET IN ARMENIA
FEBRUARY 18. Swiss doctors are to hold seminars on
well-balanced diet in Armenia Feb 18-23.
According to the Medinform news agency, Swiss professor Schmioning
will make a report at the seminars. According to Director of the
ArBeS Medical Center, unbalanced diet causes diseases like impaired
function of gastrointestinal tract, pneumonia, diabetes, autism,
diathesis, viruses - especially among children.
The bad habit about Armenians is that they combine high-salt diet
with low-water intake. In 2001 ArBeS experts drew up a table of
wholesome foodstuffs on the basis of a Swiss pyramid. The pyramid
is adjusted to national, social and economic conditions in Armenia.
The bottom of the pyramid is represented by liquids and the top by
sweets.
8TH ANNIVERSARY OF LIBERATION OF OMAR PASS
FEBRUARY 18. Today is the 8th anniversary of the
military operation for the Omar Pass (northern Martakert district,
Karabakh).
Feb 18 1994 units of Karabakh's Defence Army recaptured the pass from
Azeri troops. The Karabakh troops encircled a large group of Azeris.
Tens of Azeri soldiers and officers were captured.
According to military experts the Omar Pass operation was crucial for
the outcome of the Karabakh war.
To recap, three months later Azerbaijan was forced to sign a
long-term truce agreement. The signing followed an almost four-year
bloody war.
EARTHQUAKE SHAKES ARMENIA-GEORGIA BORDER
FEBRUARY 18.A 3-4 point earthquake (MSK-64 scale)
took place on the Armenia-Georgia border 5:31 am Feb 18. No
casualties reported.
YEREVAN BRANDY COMPANY INTENDS TO SUE GREAT VALLEY FOR USING ITS
TRADEMARK
FEBRUARY 18. The Yerevan Brandy Company (YBC) is
going to assert its right to the "Ararat" trademark in court.
According to YBC President Pierre Larretche, the Great Valley company
uses a "Great Ararat" trademark, having no right to do it as it is
similar to the YBC's "Ararat" trademark
Besides, according to Larretche the created situation impedes the
establishment of an association of producers of Armenian brandy.
4 MORE CONGRESSMEN JOINED IN GROUP ARMENIA-USA
FEBRUARY 18.4 more congressmen joined the
group of Congress Armenia-USA.
As the press office of Armenian Assembly of America today informed
ARMINFO, the total number of participants of the group made 111
congressmen, reaching to the most number for the last 7 years. The
congressmen James Barcia D-MI, Veron Ehlers R-MI, George Miller D-CA
and Fred Upton R-MI became new members if the group.
With its activity in the American Congress the group aspires to
strengthen relations between Armenia and the USA, Nagorny Karabakh
and the Unites States, as well as assists the recognition by the
Congress the fact of Armenians' Genocide of 1915 in Ottoman Turkey.
Another important sphere of the group's activity is the attempt to
present the congressmen with today's reality, when Azerbaijan and
Turkey are implementing the blockade of Armenia and Nagorny Karabakh.
The congressmen Joe Knollenberg R-MI and Frank Pallone D-Nj are the
cochairmen of the group.
AVERAGE WAGES IN YBC REACHED 265,000 DRAMS
FEBRUARY 18. For three years of the activity of the
Yerevan brandy company the average salary in the YBC reached 265,000
drams against 74,000 in 1998, when the company Pernod Ricard bought
the yerevan Brandy Company.
As ARMINFO was informed in the press office of the YBC, a society of
medical mutual assistance has (SMMA) been created in the factory. It
allows the YBC's personnel to get use of medical service and
medicaments with 70% of payment of expenses by the SMMA.
The creation of the SMMA is the continuance of a number of social
programs of YBC for the working staff. A program is already acting
now on insurance of whole life and invalidity of employees in the
result of industrial traumas, as well as providing with retirement
allowances.
U.K.EMBASSY IN ARMENIA RECEIVES EVIDENCE FROM ONE OF WITNESSES IN
"ARAGAST" CASE
FEBRUARY 18. The U.K. Embassy in Armenia has
received a letter from Stephan Newton, who witnessed the murder of
Poghos Poghosyan in the Aragast cafe.
At a court hearing today lawyer Ruben Sahakyan said he could not
ensure Newton's appearance in court. Newton left Armenia right
after Sahakyan petitioned the court to summon him.
Sahakyan said some human rights organization told him about Newton's
letter. He petitioned the court to give him three days to make the
letter available to it. The hearing was postponed for one day.
It should be noted that according to the evidence Newton was in
Araragst's lavatory at the moment of murder. His evidence may shed
light on the circumstances of the crime. To recap, bodyguard of
Armenia's president Aghamal Haroutyunyan is charged with killing
Poghosyan.
