ARMENIA FEB 18
FEBRUARY 12. Chairman of the Clearing House of
Russian Federation Sergey Stepashin will arrive in Yerevan Feb 18.
In the course of his visit, Stepashin will meet Armenian President
Robert Kocharyan, Chairman of the Control Chamber of Armenia Ashot
Tavadyan and other officials, the Russian Embassy in Armenia told
ARMINFO. The sides intend to discuss prospects of bilateral
cooperation of relevant departments, as well as economic issues.
HIS HOLINESS KAREKIN II RECEIVES MR. JEAN-NOEL GUERINI, PRESIDENT OF
THE GENERAL COUNCIL OF BOUCHES DU RHENE
FEBRUARY 12.His Holiness Karekin II, Supreme
Patriarch and Catholicos of All Armenians, received Feb 12 Mr.
Jean-Noel Guerini of France, Senator, and President of the General
Council of Bouches du Rhene region, and the delegation accompanying
him. His Grace Bishop Daron Jerejian, Vicar to the Pontifical Legate
of Eastern Europe, was among the French delegation.
His Holiness and Mr. Jean-Noel Guerini cordially recalled their first
meeting in Marseilles last year, which according to Mr. Gurini, served as
the primary incentive for the French delegation's visit to Armenia and the
Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin. Addressing His Holiness, Mr. Gurini said,
"We remember discussing the Genocide of the Armenians together in
Marseilles. I resolved to come to Armenia and visit you as a result of that
meeting".
In the course of the meeting, Mr. Guerini, stated his willingness to
support Armenia, as well as the Armenian Church. He noted that he
would personally make every effort to contribute to the
reconstruction of the Armenian Church of Marseilles.
His Holiness Karekin II expressed his fatherly love and gratitude towards
the French people and nation for their kindness towards the Armenians
residing in France. His Holiness expressed his deep appreciation, on behalf
of the Armenian people, to Mr. Guerini as a representative of his
nation, for France's formal recognition of the Armenian Genocide.
His Holiness stated, "During this period of Great Lent, we are all
called to examine our lives and alter them for the better. Your
visit here to the Mother See of the Armenian Nation gives us the
opportunity to once again state our appreciation and commendation to
a country which supports the remembrance of the Armenian Genocide,
and in so doing, we pray for an increase in introspection and care in
the realm of world affairs."
At the conclusion of the meeting, Mr. Guerini thanked His Holiness
for the audience. He promised to return to Armenia and again visit
the Mother See.
TRAGEDY IN "ARAGAST" CAFE SHOWED HOW ARMENIAN SOCIETY IS
DEFENSELESS TODAY BEFORE ARBITRARY RULE OF AUTHORITIES
FEBRUARY 12.The tragedy in Yerevan's Aragast cafe
once more demonstrated how Armenian society is unprotected before the
arbitrary rule of powers. The head of the Committee on defence of
principal rights and freedoms of citizens, the ex minister of
education and science of Armenia Ashot Bleyan today stated during the
meeting with the journalists.
We shall remind that a tiff took place at the night of Sept 24
between the Georgian citizen Poghos Poghosian and the bodyguards of
Armenia's President Robert Kocharian. A bit later Poghosian was found
dead in the lavatory of the cafe, and the judicial-medical expertise
established that he died in the result of craniocerebral trauma.
The judicial procedure against one of the bodyguards of the president
Aghamal Haroutunian is going on now, by the way the later
categorically denies his guilt.
According to Bleyan, this criminal case presented no difficulties for
law-enforcement bodies and it could be revealed two-three days later.
Nevertheless, the investigation was carried out two months, an
accusation was instituted only against one persons - the criminal
procedure initially does not set itself the task of revealing the
truth, but solves quite different problems. Besides, no service
investigation was held in the system of the president's guarding and
no one of its employees bore responsibility for it, Bleyan mentioned.
The ex minister and the ex political prisoner also touched those who
were in the cafe that ill-fated night as visitors and now refuse to
give testimonies in the court. "I don't understand, how, refusing to
tell the obvious, the rector of Yerevan's Conservatory Armen Smbatian
enters the Conservatory after that the heads them", Bleyan stated. He
thinks that just the authorities commit a terror through judicial and
law-enforcement bodies as regards the whole society on the whole and
each citizen taken separately. The only way out of the situation -
the immediate resignation of the head of the state and all the
branches of authorities, to carry out legal elections and then the
legal authority will ensure genuine independence of legal bodies of
the country, Bleyan stated.
AGREEMENT OF YEREVAN AND TBILISI ON JOINT PARTICIPATION IN REGIONAL
PROJECTS WILL NOT ALLOW OFFICIAL BAKU TO HINDER ARMENIA'S
PARTICIPATION IN PROJECTS OF SOUTH CAUCASIAN REGION
FEBRUARY 12. The agreement on joint participation
in regional projects, concluded in the course of the official visit
of Armenia's foreign minister Vardan Oskanian to Tbilisi, will not
allow the official Baku to hinder the participation of the Armenian
side in the projects, implemented in the South Caucasian region. The
foreign minister of Armenia Vardan Oskanian today stated.
According to him, in the problem of Armenia's participation in
regional projects there are both serious prospects and obvious
problems wholly connected with Azerbaijan's negative position, which
sharply comes out against Armenia's participation in any projects in
South Caucasus. The minister thinks, the agreement concluded
between Yerevan and Tbilisi may become a serious stimulus for
official Baku's changing its position.
DEPOSITORS DEMAND TO RETURN THEIR MONEY
FEBRUARY 12.Several dozens of bank depositors held
an unsanctioned rally near the presidential palace today demanding
to return their money.
After months of knocking in vain at the doors of various departments,
the depositors of the Credit-Yerevan, Credit-Service and United banks
decided to hold a rally with no real hope for receiving an answer
about the future of their deposits. However, they also said hope is
the last to die.
It should be noted that just as Credit-Yerevan, Credit-Service is
governed by an interim administration, but it has fewer depositors,
some 140 people. The CB proposes that the fate of their deposits be
decided in near future. However, the depositors are aware of the
current state of the bank.
It should be noted that the depositors relied heavily on court to
settle this positively. That's why they have filed several actions to
courts. Their case is to be heard at the trial court of Yerevan's
Center-Nork Marash community Feb 18.
As for the United Bank, its depositors have been waiting for any
response to come from the bank's interim administration for already
two years and now are inspired for a new hope by the recent
appointment of a new administration. True, it is not know yet when
this administration is going to make any decision on the matter. The
ralliers said they are going to look for justice at all levels, from
the president up to the Council of Europe. Today they were promised
to be shortly received by one of the executives of the presidential
staff.
