11 ARMENIAN ILLEGAL EMIGRANTS TRIED TO CROSS CZECH-AUSTRIAN BORDER
FEBRUARY 7. Eleven Armenian illegal emigrants tried
to cross the Czech-Austrian border. According to the radio "Prague,"
the frontier violators were detained by the Austrian frontier-guards.
There were children among them. The interrogation showed that they
are refugees, who were granted asylum in Czechia.
OSCE MINSK GROUP CO-CHAIRS TO MAKE NEW PROPOSALS ON KARABAKH
CONFLICT'S SETTLEMENT
FEBRUARY 7. The OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs are
expected to make new proposals on the Karabakh conflicts settlement
in the course of their forthcoming visit to the region, Azeri Foreign
Minister Vilayat Guliev told journalists.
He pointed out that on March 24 it will be ten years since the
mediators were involved in the settlement process of the Karabakh
conflict. "Unfortunately, during this period the mediators were not
able to achieve any considerable progress in the solution of this
problem. Azerbaijan hopes that they will take more serious steps in
this direction," Guliev said.
The co-chairs are expected to visit the conflict region at the end of
Feb - at the beginning of March. They will visit Karabakh, Armenia,
Azerbaijan and will monitor at the contact line of the Karabakh
conflict.
CHAIRMAN OF UNION OF ARMENIANS OF RUSSIA MET AZERI PRESIDENT
FEBRUARY 7. Chairman of the Union of Armenians
of Russia Ara Abrahamyan held a meeting with the Azeri President
Heidar Aliev within the framework of the World Economic Forum.
According to ITAR-TASS, the sides discussed prospects of the Karabakh
conflict's settlement.
Ara Abrahamyan called for peaceful settlement of the conflict through
the recognition of Karabakh as a sovereign part of Armenia. He
pointed out that this territory has always been settled with
Armenians, and Karabakh has never belong to Azerbaijan de-jure.
"REPUBLIC" PARTY INDIGNANT AT AUTHORITIES' ATTEMPT TO DISCREDIT
VAZGEN SARGSSIAN
FEBRUARY 7. The "Republic" party is indignant at
the Armenian authorities' attempt to discredit the prime minister
Vazgen Sargssian, who fell victim to the terrorist act at the
Armenian Parliament on October 27, 1999.
In its statement the party regard as an the attempt of discrediting
Vazgen Sargssian the initiation of criminal proceedings against
him. It is obvious that the country's authorities are rendering all
possible support to the terrorists, trying to justify their crime,
the statement says. The Political Council of the "Republic" party
denounces the current authorities' policy aimed at undermining the
foundations of the statehood. "The party intends to further struggle
the criminal regime and is sure that the country's population will
support it," the statement says.
The Armenian mass media recently spread the information that the
Prosecutor's Office of Armenia initiated criminal proceedings against
Vazgen Sargssian. He was incriminated with the clubbing of the
participants in demonstrations in 1996. But the Prosecutor's office
refuted the information, stating that criminal proceedings were not
initiated against Vazgen Sargssian, but in connection with the very
facts. The investigation has evidence about Vazgen Sargssian's having
been involved in the clubbing, but the facts were not confirmed.
COMMUNIST PARTY OF ARMENIA DEMANDS GOVERNMENT'S RESIGNATION
FEBRUARY 7. The Communist Party of Armenia continues demanding the Government's resignation, the chairman of the CPA parliamentary faction, Frunze Kharatyan, said at a briefing today. He said the CPA is going to make such a demand right after the interim parliamentary commission examining the Government's activities passes its resolution concerning the introduction of per minute fee for intercity phone calls in Armenia.
