Talking to journalists, Deputy Minister of National Security of Armenia Grigory Grigorian stated that there is ample evidence for bringing a charge against the Armenian citizen arrested for espionage for Turkey. Grigorian did not report any other details, including the arrestee's name, to the journalists, pleading the interests of the investigation. He only pointed out that the trial of the case will be public. It is to be noted that the arrestee is the specialist in Turkic philology Murad Bojolyan, formerly head of the Department of Turkey in the Armenian Foreign Office. He was detained on January 26 and charged with espionage. YBC RESTORES DISTILLING SHOPS FEBRUARY 6. The distilling shops of the Yerevan Brandy Company (YBC) in the Armavir and Aigevan branches of the company have been restored. According to the information reported to ARMINFO by the YBC press service, the distilling capacities were increased, considering the expected increase in brandy consumption in 2002 and the following years. The company switched over to the double distillation method, which was partly applied until 2001 and meets Armenia's state standards. YBC Production Director Jean Christof Veion pointed out that the double distillation method allows the flavor of Armenian grapes to be appreciated and softer alcohols to be obtained. FIRST ANNIVERSARY OF RECOGNITION OF ARMENIAN GENOCIDE MARKED IN FRANCE FEBRUARY 6. Arrangements marking the 1st anniversary of recognition of the Armenian Genocide in Ottoman Turkey were organized in Paris, in January and early February. As part of the arrangements, an Armenian week was held in Paris with the assistance of the Armenian Embassy in France and Mayor of Paris G. Delano. The week began with the opening of the exhibition "The Armenian Genocide: the images of the 20th century" in the historical halls of the Mayor's Office of Paris. French actors and singers of Armenian descent gave performances. Conferences and round-tables on the recognition of the Armenian Genocide, geopolitical situation around Armenia as well as Karabakh settlement were organized. YEREVAN BRANDY COMPANY BEGAN PRODUCTION OF OAK TUNS FEBRUARY 6.The yerevan Brandy Company in Jan of this year started the production of oak tuns from Armenian wood. The press office of the YBC informed ARMINFO. The process of preparation of the wooden raw materials for processing will last about a year and a half. Wooden boards, which are used in the production of tuns, corresponding to international standards, are made by modern equipment, bought by the company. In 2002 the YBC intends to produce 2,000 tuns with volume of 400 liters. It will be the first capacities from Armenian oak, used for keeping cognac. The leadership of the company thinks that the new barrels will assist the raising the quality of the YBC's product. EDUARD GRIGORIAN DENIES CHARGE OF COMMITTING ESPECIALLY DANGEROUS STATE CRIME FEBRUARY 6. Eduard Grigorian, a defendant in the October 27 case, denied the charge of committing an especially dangerous state crime. Responding to the questions of Tigran Janoyan, who represents the interests of the killed prime minister Vazgen Sargssian's family, he pointed out that the aforementioned charge does not correspond to the facts. According to him, "the action [he] took part in was not a state crime." He substantiated his statement by the fact that he did not shoot at anyone nor did he threaten anyone. He also pointed out that the ammunition he purchased could not be used, and it testifies to the fact that they had no intention to kill anyone. He disagreed with the lawyer's claim that the group burst into the assembly hall of the National Assembly to seize power. It is impossible for five persons to achieve this goal. Grigorian also pointed out that the case does not contain any facts confirming that the group surrendered as it was not supported by the people. The defendant ruled out the possibility that the action was masterminded by foreign forces. According to him, the plan was the result of discussions of Nairi and Karen Hunanians. Grigorian did not deny that he supported Nairi Hunanian, stressing that he did not participate in the elaboration of the program of "uprising". CARNEGY FUND TO ALLOCATE $6,000 TO DEVELOP LIBRARY FUNDS OF ARMENIA, GEORGIA AND AZERBAIJAN FEBRUARY 6. The Carnegy Fund is going to allocate $6,000 to develop the library funds of Armenia, Georgia and Azerbaijan. This sum is part of a grant aimed at developing library business in the South Caucasus. The Association of Libraries of Armenia and the Association of Information Experts of Georgia will use this money to organize a week of national libraries in Apr 2002. The Association for Development of Libraries in Azerbaijan will use the funds received to restore the national library fund. ARMENIAN CINEMA TO BE PRESENTED AT CANNES FILM FESTIVAL FEBRUARY 6. The Armenian cinema will not be presented at the Berlin International Film Festival, the first large film festival of the year opening today, because of delay in financing. At the same time, the "Symphony of Silence" film of the Armenian film director Vigen Chaldranyan will represent Armenia at the Cannes Film Festival to be opened in May, Director of the "Hayfilm" ("Armenfilm") Studio Gevorg Gevorgyan told ARMINFO today.
