POPE JOHN PAUL II EXPECTED TO VISIT AZERBAIJAN IN MAY

FEBRUARY 2. The Pope John Paul II is expected to visit Azerbaijan in May. According to the Azeri Foreign Ministry, the visit is timed to the 10th Anniversary of establishment of diplomatic relations between Baku and Vatican. According to the Baku sources, Azeri President Heidar Aliev is likely to give a banquet in honor of the Pope. Besides the president, the Pope will meet Chairman of the Spiritual Department of Muslims of the Caucasus Allakhshukyur Pashazade. During the meetings, the sides will touch issues of cooperation between religious denominations, as well as of struggle against terrorism and its condemnation by different religions, including the Islam. The sides are expected to discuss the Karabakh conflict's settlement problem as well.

AZERBAIJAN USES STRUGGLE AGAINST TERRORISM IN ITS OWN POLITICAL INTERESTS, VARDAN OSKANYAN SAID

FEBRUARY 2. Azerbaijan uses the struggle against terrorism in its own political interests, Armenian Foreign Minister Vardan Oskanyan said during a discussion of prospects of development of Central Asia and the Caucasus at the International Economic Forum in New York. The Armenian foreign minister said using the struggle against terrorism properly, the establishment of stability and cooperation in the region will become quite possible. While Azerbaijan creates tension in the region manipulating the international situation. Participating in the discussion were also Azeri President Heidar Aliev, Turkish Foreign Minister Ismail Cem, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Adeli, Afghan Foreign Minister Abudllakh Abdullakh and Mongol Prime Minister Nambad Ekhbayar.

TERRITORY OF YEREVAN INSTITUTE OF PHYSICS SOLD FOR INDIVIDUAL CONSTRUCTION

FEBRUARY 2. Lands in the territory of Yerevan Institute of Physics are being sold for individual construction. Cottages are expected to be built in the recreational area and in the green plantations, the region's population expressed its indignation to an ARMINFO correspondent. They said the Yerevan chief architect has already made his decision concerning the auction sale of these lands, and one of such auctions was held without any announcement in the press. The residents also said they will not allow the authorities to destroy children's playgrounds by building cottages. A master plan of Yerevan Institute of Physics was approved as far back as in 60s, and was not changed since then, which suggests that activities of the Yerevan authorities are illegal. Meanwhile, talking to an ARMINFO correspondent, Chief Architect of Yerevan Narek Sargssyan said the project of the auction sale of lands for construction of 5-6 cottages in this region was really elaborated, however, he was against this idea.

FEBRUARY 2.Vice-Speaker of the Armenian Parliament Gagik Aslanyan comes out against abolition of capital punishment, it is Aslanyan's own statement made at the "Azdak" discussion club today. He said even if Armenia accepts CE's ultimatum on abolition of capital punishment, the criminals, who carried out a terrorist act in the Armenian Parliament Oct 27, 1999, should be exceptions. Aslanyan pointed out that these terrorists should receive death penalty, as the matter concerns our national dignity. "At last, an issue of abolition of capital punishment in Armenia is settled by the Armenian parliament and not by the Council of Europe," Aslanyan said.-

40% OF YOUNG ARMENIANS HAVE POOR SIGHT

FEBRUARY 2. Nearly 40% of young people and 20% of children in Armenia are short-sighted, the eye micro-surgeon of the Eximer Laser Surgery Center, Lusine Bekirska-Tamazyan, told ARMINFO. The center was opened eight months ago. She said Eximer corrects sight with no incision. 300 such operations have been performed since the opening of the center. Only 2% of patients report having developed complications after surgery. People aged 18-50, with a myopia of less than 10 dioptres and not classified as risky, constitute the center's clientele. The risky groups include diabetic patients, people with poor regeneration and hormonal imbalance and others. The center has German equipment. The director of the center, Valeria Avakyan, said it has the same equipment as the Fyodorov Institute and the Helmholtz Clinic in Moscow and some hospitals in Georgia and Azerbaijan. The device they use for eye surgery is computerized and excludes any mistake by a surgeon as special testing is carried out on foil before an operation. Only in case of a positive result surgeons begin the real operation, lasting for no longer than three minutes. 2 sergeons trained in Germany and Moscow perform opeorations at the center. Bekirska-Tamazyan said such operations are not obligatory and are only an alternative to glasses and lenses.

SELF-DETERMINATION UNION TO STRUGGLE FOR ESTABLISHMENT PRESIDENTIAL GOVERNMENT IN ARMENIA

FEBRUARY 2. The Self-Determination Union has always been and is going to further struggle for the establishment of presidential government in Armenia, the union's leader, Parouyr Hayrikyan, said at a meeting with leaders of the party's regional branches. He said his party will continue enlightening those childishly arguing for establishing parliamentary government not understanding that presidential government has all the advantages of parliamentary one and provides for a strong parliament. Meanwhile, parliamentary government excludes the factor of personal responsibility and those speaking about presidential dictatorship "gauging the people's welfare by the number of vodka-bottles" should return to "their Bolshevik den" where they so ardently support the last years' dictatorship.
