U.K. GOVERNMENT MAKES FIRST MOVE TOWARDS RECOGNIZING ARMENIAN GENOCIDE
ARMENIA'S TOP OFFICIALS SUBMIT STATEMENTS ABOUT THEIR PROPERTY AND
INCOME
JANUARY 30. Armenia's President, Prime Minister and
other top officials have submitted statements about their property
and income, Armenia's State Incomes Minister Yervand Zakharyan told
ARMINFO. He also submitted such a statement.
According to the law on property and income statement by top
officials, this process started Jan 1 and should stop Feb 1. As of
today, a day before the expiry of the deadline, the State Incomes
Ministry has received 300 property and income statements, while a
total of 2,960 top officials should submit such statements and
considering affiliates, who also should declare their incomes, this
figure should total 10,000.
Zakharyan said that after being processed corresponding data should
appear in the press within the next 3-4 months.
In case of untimely submission of a statement, the law envisages
fines worth 50,000 drams (nearly $88). The law also stipulates
that the ministry should check up on the statements, however, the
government has not yet established a corresponding procedure.
50% OF ARMENIAN WOMEN DO NOT UNDERGO REGULAR MEDICAL EXAMINATIONS
JANUARY 30. Over 50% of Armenian women have not
seen gynecologists during the last five years, says the report on
demography and health presented in Yerevan today.
According to the document, only every fifth woman has seen a
gynecologist during the last 12 months. The high number of abortions
in the country testifies that women visited gynecologists for
abortions, not for regular medical examinations. Only 15% of Armenian
women are aware of the ways of examining their breasts, but only 1%
of the respondents confessed that they ever "allowed" doctors to
examine their breasts. These facts testify to the necessity for
reforms in the sphere of women's health in Armenia, the report says.
42% OF WOMEN AND 15% OF MEN IN ARMENIA DO NOT KNOW HOW TO PROTECT
THEMSELVES FROM SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED DISEASES
JANUARY 30. 42% of women and 15% of men in Armenia
have the least idea of how to protect themselves from sexually
transmitted diseases (STD), says a report for 2000.
According to it, 2/3 of "competent" women and 81% of such men were
able to name at least one typical sign of STDs. 7% of men and 7% of
women admitted that had used a condom during their last intercourse.
Armenian men use condoms six times as often when making love to
casual partners as in their sexual relations with permanent ones.
ARMENIA'S PROSECUTOR GENERAL'S OFFICE DISPROVED INFORMATIONS OF PRESS
ON INSTITUTING CRIMINAL PROCEEDINGS AGAINST VAZGEN SARGSIAN
JANUARY 30. The Prosecutor General's Office of Armenia refuted the information of a number of Armenian mass media about the institution of two criminal proceedings against the former prime minster of Armenia Vazgen Sargsian, died in the result of the terrorist act in Armenian parliament in Oct 1999. As the press office of Armenia's Prosecutor General's Office informed ARMINFO, no criminal proceedings have been instituted against Vazgen Sargsian. The General Procuracy supposes that the incident of June 21, 1995 in Botanic Garden, could serve as a basis for speculations on this theme. The former head of the department of execution of criminal punishments of Armenia's Ministry of internal affairs Moushegh Saghatelian was "distinguished" during the incident and accusation was brought against him for excess of servicing authorities. In the framework of this case the questioned as a witness the former member of the Central electoral committee Vova Hakhverdian stated that not Saghatelian but Vazgen Sargsian and his bodyguard Movses Geghangulian used violence against him after the presidential elections on Sept 26, 1996. However, further the General Procuracy did not receive well-founded evidences to the statement.
