PROCESSION TO ATTRACT PUBLIC ATTENTION OF BREAST CANCER HELD IN YEREVAN

OCTOBER 13. A procession was organized in Yerevan today to attract the public attention to the problem of breast cancer. Participating in the procession were about 1,000 people, including representatives from the country's regions. It is to be noted that in many countries, including Armenia, October was declared a month of struggle against this dangerous disease. Participating ni the procession were also representatives of international organizations and embassies. According to the Center of Mammography, 10% of women were diagnosed as having malignant tumors. The Center was established five years ago.

ARMENIA'S PRESIDENT VISITED NATIONAL PICTURE GALLERY

OCTOBER 13. Armenia's President Robert Kocharyan visited the National Picture Gallery in Yerevan today. During the visit Kocharyan asked about the gallery's problems. He promised to assist the gallery in searching for patrons of art for the gallery, but the amounts needed for the repair of the gallery's building are not so large not to be obtained.

DELAY OF BARGAIN WITH SALE OF CHEMICAL GIANT OF ARMENIA MAY BRING TO STOPPAGE OF NATURAL GAS DELIVERY TO REPUBLIC

OCTOBER 13.The The delay of signing an agreement with the Ukrainian company "Inter Contact" on buying the 51% of shares of the chemical giant of Armenia - the "Nairit" CJSC was the reason of the official warning by the "ITERA" on possible stoppage of gas supply to Armenia since Oct 15. As an ARMINFO correspondent was informed in the management of the energetic complex of Armenia, in accordance with the agreement, after signing an agreement on privatization, the "Inter Contact" open-end company pledged to repay in accordance with the schedule the current debt of Armenia for gas at the rate of $3.4 mln, accumulated at the "Nairit" CJSC. It should be noted that Armenia's energy minister Karen Galoustyan received a warning about discontinuation of gas deliveries to Armenia in early Oct. Meanwhile, the day before receiving the warning he had told journalists that Armenia had no current debts to Itera, and the schedule of repayment of the debt accrued earlier was not being violated. He said in the first half of 2001 alone Nairit had a $7 mln debt to Armrosgazprom. To remind, Armenia's industry and trade minister Karen Tchshmarityan has also mentioned the sum of $3.5 mln recently. He said Inter Contract should have invested this sum in Nairit's energy needs. The money will be included in the authorized capital during the signing of a contract to sell Nairit. Moreover, Tchshmarityan did not exclude the possibility of Itera's participation in the project as a shareholder.

FORMER HEAD OF DEPARTMENT ON EXECUTION OF CRIMINAL PUNISHMENTS OF ARMENIAN MINISTRY OF INTERIOR DETAINED

OCTOBER 13. The former head of the Department on Execution of Criminal Punishments of the Armenian Ministry of Interior Mushegh Saghatelyan was detained by the Law-enforcement bodies at Oct 13 night. According to information received by ARMINFO from the Armenian Prosecutor General's Office, no charge has been brought against Saghatelyan yet. Although, a criminal proceedings on the fact of evidently false delation and accusation of especially dangerous state and other crimes were initiated against him in September. It should be noted that Saghatelyan made a statement about President Robert Kocharyan's and Defense Minister Serzh Sargssyan's participation in the organization of a terrorist act carried out in the Armenian parliament Oct 27, 1999. Besides, the Prosecutor General's Office has information, according to which, on getting his job, Saghatelyan showed a false college degree. Saghatelyan was released form his post in April 2000 and was recently excluded from the system of Interior Affairs for breaking professional secrecy. The Prosecutor General's Office refused to specify whether there were any other arrested persons on this case. In its turn, the "Hanrapetutiun" oppositional party stated that no other arrested person exist at present.
