MOST OF MEMBERS OF SUB-COMMITTEE FOR CENTRAL ASIA AND CAUCASUS OF COMMISSION FOR INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS OF U.S. SENATE PRONOUNCED FOR PRESERVING SECTION 907
OCTOBER 11. At a sitting Oct 10 most of the
members of the sub-committee for the Central Asia and the Caucasus of
the commission for international relations of the U.S. Senate
pronounced for preserving Section 907 of the Freedom Supporting Act,
prohibiting the United States to provide Azerbaijan with direct
assistance, ARMINFO has learned from the press-service of the
Armenian Assembly of America (AAA).
The members of the sub-committee acquainted themselves with a
document submitted by the AAA stressing that the abolishment of
Section 907 could not only break the stability in the South Caucasus
but also harm the United States' interests. The document also
mentioned that units of the Al Qa'idah terrorist organization have
operated in Azerbaijan.
"Section 907 can be abolished only in case Azerbaijan lifts its
blockade of Armenia and Karabakh," AAA representatives said.
16 ARMENIAN DIED DURING RECENT COLLISIONS IN ABKHAZIA
OCTOBER 11. 16 Armenian have been killed during the
recent collisions in Abkhazia. The chairman of the parliamentary
fraction ARF Dashnaktsutiun Aghvan Vardanyan today informed at the
briefing.
According to him, the ARFD has come out with an initiative to send a
group of Armenia parliamentarians to Tbilisi and Sukhumi for meeting
with the powers of Georgia for the purpose of the issue on
safeguarding the security of Armenian population of Abkhazia.
In his turn, the leader of the parliamentary fraction of the "Unity"
bloc Galoust Sahakyan also expressed anxiety with the development of
events in Abkhazia. He informed that the meeting of the spokesmen of
parliaments of France, Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia will be held
in Tbilisi on Nov 3-4 by the initiative of the speaker of the French
senate Christian Ponsle. According to Sahakyan, the situation in
Abkhazia and other issues will be discussed in the course of that
meeting.
The representatives of other parliamentary fractions and groups
also expressed anxiety with the recent events in Abkhazia and stated
that the powers of Armenia must do its best to safeguard the security
of Armenian population in Georgia.
SECRETARY OF ARMENIA'S SECURITY COUNCIL BLAMED ONSET OF COMBAT
ACTIONS IN ABKHAZIA
OCTOBER 11. During a meeting with journalists today Secretary of Armenia's Security Council, Defence Minister Serzh Sargsyan blamed the onset of combat actions in Abkhazia. He came back from the meeting of the security secretaries of the countries members to the Treaty of Collective Security. He said the actions in Abkhazia are blameworthy like any act of terrorism. "The more so as Armenians were killed," Sargsyan said. He said the destabilization of the situation in Georgia is sure to have its impact on Armenia as well. ARMENIA'S "CHRISTIAN DEMOCRATIC UNION" PARTY CALLS TO OBSERVANCE OF LAW IN RESPECT OF AZAT ARSHAKYAN WHO IS UNDER ARREST OCTOBER 11. Armenia's "Christian Democratic Union"
party called the powers of the country to observance of law in
respect of one of the founders of the party Azat Arshakyan, who is
under arrest now.
As it is known, some time ago Azat Arshakyan was detained, and then
taken into custody connected with that a whole arsenal of weapons has
been found at his house. An investigation is being carried out on
this fact, on Oct 5 of the current year the court of the first
instance refused to change Arshakyan's preventive punishment and he
continues to be under arrest.
In the statement of the CDU its authors consider their debt to remind
about that the humanity and impartiality are the main criteria of the
democratic legal system. Th mitigation of the preventive punishment
in the course of the investigation is one of manifestation of it. "We
don't ask to display tolerance in respect of Arshakyan, but observe
the norms of humanism, attached to the legislation. We are sure that
the violation of the aforementioned norms only consolidates the
opinion, spread in the society about the ordered character of this or
that case of not objective conducting of investigation", the
statement of Armenian Christian democrats says.
JUDGE SAMVEL UZOUNYAN BEGAN TO INTERROGATE DEFENDANT IN OCT 27 CASE

OCTOBER 11. Judge Samvel Uzounyan began today to interrogate defendant in the Oct 27 case (killing of several Armenian statesmen in the parliament). To recap, Unanyan had earlier refused to answer questions by lawyers representing the interests of the aggrieved party in the case. Nevertheless, Unanyan spoke out today. True, he tried to evade specific questions concerning details of the act, alleging that he was under stress during the first hours after the act. He said all his efforts were aimed at surrendering and preserving his life. Unanyan reconfirmed his wish to appeal to the Armenian people. he is going to do that during the next court hearing Oct 15. |
