FIRST STONE OF NEW US EMBASSY LAID IN YEREVAN

OCTOBER 1. The first stone of the new building of the US Embassy in Armenia was laid in the vicinity of the Yerevan lake. Participating in the ceremony were Catholicos of All Armenians Garegin II, US Ambassador to Armenia Michael Lemmon, Yerevan Mayor Robert Nazarian and other officials. In his speech the US Ambassador pointed out that an important construction of safe and prosperous Armenia, which is integrated into all regional and international processes, is curently under way in the country. The ceremony participants kept a moment of silence in memory of the victims of terrorist acts committed in the Armenian Parliament on October 27, 1999 and in New York and Washington on September 11, 2001. It is to be noted that Michael Lemmon, who completed his diplomatic mission in Armenia, left the country on October 1.

WUSHU WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP IN YEREVAN POSTPONED

OCTOBER 1. The wushu world championship, which was to be held in Yerevan October 3-7, has been postponed, the Wushu Federation of Armenia told ARMINFO. According to the same source, the world championship is expected to be held on November 1-4. The championship has been postponed at the request of the International Olympic Committee, "in connection with possible beginning of the action of retribution against international terrorism on the part of the USA and its allies." It is to be noted that Wushu Federations in 58 countries confirmed their intention to participate in the world championship in Armenia. The Chinese team is the favorite of the championship. Amateurs will also participate in the championship. The prize-winners will receive corresponding medals, and the winner will receive the Cup of World Champions.

ALBERT MKRTICHIAN'S "JOYFUL BBUS" WINS GRAND PRIX AT YALTA TVMOVIEFORUM

OCTOBER 1.The work of the renowned Armenian film director Albert Mkrtichian "Joyful Bus" won Grand Prix at the "Together" TVmovieforum held in Yalta. Besides the Grand Prix, Albert Mkrtichian received a certificate of the Union of Journalists of Russia for "Poetic depiction of realities of life." Talking to ARMINFO, Albert Mkrtichian said that video cassettes with the film will soon be on sale, but he did not specify the terms. According to him, it will be done in a month or so.

FIRST SHOW OF RUSSIAN DIRECTOR SERGEY SOLOVYOV'S FILM "TENDER AGE" HELD IN YEREVAN

OCTOBER 1. The first show of the Russian director Sergey Solovyov's film "Tender age" was held in the "Moscow" cinema in Yerevan. Solovyov's last first show was a sensational film "Assa" demonstrated in the age of reorientation. "I shoot a film about the first generation of adults, who entered the life after the breakdown of the Soviet Union. But it was not a lost generation, it was a found one," the director pointed out. The topic was based on real stories, which the director was told by his son Dmitri, who played the leading role in the film. "Tender age" is a story about people living a bitter era of changes and surviving, due to the best human feelings. OCTOBER 1. The unification of the CIs countries' cinema producers may become a way out of the heavy situation for cinematographers of the post-Soviet area. Russian Director Sergey Solovyov made this statement at his meeting with journalists of Yerevan. He said that the introduction of a system uniting the Cis countries' film producers will contribute to quickly rehabilitating the dying national studios' power and making the cinema production profitable by expanding the film distribution. "Recently I met my colleagues in Tbilisi, who graduated from State High Institute of Cinematography. All they are currently unemployed, but it is a creating potential," the director said.

EXHIBITION "BODY AND SOUL" IS IN CULTURAL CENTER TEKEYAN

NAIRI HUMANIAN'S LAWYER SUDDENLY DIES

OCTOBER 1.Today's hearing of the October 27 case has been adjourned as a result of a sudden death of the lawyer Artavazd Karapetian, who represented the interests of the principal defendant Nairi Hunanian. The hearing will be resumed on October 3. As it was reported earlier Nairi Hunanian was to make an appeal to the Armenian nation.

US AMBASSADOR TO ARMENIA ESTIMATES POSITIVELY ARMENIA'S PROVIDING ITS AIR SPACE TO US AIR FORCES

OCTOBER 1.US Ambassador to Armenia Michael LEmmon estimates positively Armenia's providing its air space to the US aviation. He said right after the Sept 11 acts of terrorism both the government and the people of Armenia extended their deep condolences to the United States and proposed the country their assistance to the extent of their abilities. "Let's the American government decide what kind of assistance we can expect from Armenia," Lemmon said. He said the current developments worldwide are a coalition of civilizations rather than a clash of them. We appeal to all its Muslim brothers and sisters, who are sure to blame the acts of terrorism in the United States, to join us, Lemmon said. He also thanked his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Farhad Koleini for his visit to the Holy See of Echmiadzin and for conveying his deep condolences to Lemmon. He said that was a generous step. That may be a beginning of restoration of US-Iranian relations, Lemmon concluded.
