ENGINE-DRIVER
KILLED IN ACCIDENT IN YEREVAN'S UNDERGROUND
AUGUST 27. An engine-driver was killed in an accident in Yerevan's metro
(underground) Aug 26.
As ARMINFO learned from the press-office of Yerevan's metro, a train
stopped between the stations of Zoravar Andranik and Republic Square 4-5 pm because of
brakes malfunction. Witnesses say the train's engineer Vigen Simonyan (57) had tried to
repair the brakes without the help of his assistant but had received an electric blow. The
next train bumped into its standing predecessor. Fortunately no passenger was killed.
The press-office of Yerevan's metro extended its deep condolences to
the relatives and friends of the killed engine-driver. It noted
however that the accident took place because of a breach of the
driving instructions.
INVALIDS OF KARABAKH WAR ORGANIZED PROTEST ACTION DEMANDING TO PAY THEIR
PENSIONS
AUGUST 27. The invalids of the Karabakh war organized an action of
protest near Armenia's House of Government today demanding to pay their pensions. Some of
veterans have not got their pensions of 16.000 drams (about $29) for three months already.
It should be noted that the ministry of finance and economy announced on Aug 17 that 501
mln drams ($1 mln) for July is transferred, and during the coming few days the debt for
Aug will also be repaid. At the same time, one of the participants of the action said that
the veterans were promissed to receive the money by Aug 20, but this promise was broken.
So, reduced to despair the people decided to protest.
22 PEOPLE BECAME VICTIMS OF ARMENIA'S POOLS
AUGUST 27. 22 people have become victims of Armenia's pools by today.
8 of them drowned in the lake of Sevan, the press-office of Department of Emergencies by
Armenia's government told ARMINFO.
According to the source, 6 of the victims are children. One of the drowned is a foreigner
- 56 years-old Mehmet Tekdemir - citizen of Turkey, Kurd by origin, died in the lake of
Sevan on 22 July.
HUNGER-STRIKE OF ARMENIAN CONVICTED LASTS FOR TWO MONTHS
AUGUST 27. The hunger-strike of an Armenian convicted, 24 years-old Agabek
Hayrapetyan, sentenced to 15 years of emprisonment for the murder of two servicemen lasts
for two months.
Hayrapetyan himself denies his participation to the murder. It is for the third time he
runs to such a extreme protest measure.
As the director of the Department of control over the implementation of punishment of
Armenia's General Prosecutor's Office general Vagarshak Vardanyan told ARMINFO, it is the
way Hayrapetyan protests against an injust, as to the condemned, sentence.
According to Vardanyan, Hayrapetyan is inhausted, but his life is out
of danger. "Hayrapetyan is always under the control of the medical personnel,"
the general says. All the more, taking into consideration the state of Hayrapetyan's
health, the convicted is undergone to a compulsory feeding.
ARMENIA'S FOREIGN MINISTER AND HEAD OF DEMOCRATIC LEAGUE OF KOSOVO DISCUSSED
PROSPECTS OF SETTLEMENT OF CONFLICTS IN CAUCASUS AND BALKANS
AUGUST 27. The foreign minister of Armenia Vardan Oskanian and the
head of the Democratic League of Kosovo Ibrahim Rugova in Kosovo discussed the prospects
of settlement of conflicts in Balkans and in Nagornyy Karabakh.
As ARMINFO was informed in the Department on public relations of Armenia's Foreign
Ministry, in the course of the meeting Ibrahim Rugova acquainted the Armenian minister
with the situation in Kosovo, as well as with problems, standing before its
administration. He also set forth his opinions on the future status of Kosovo, as well as
on possible prospects of development of situation in the region. Vardan Oskanian, in his
turn, acquainted Ibrahim Rugova with the situation in the region of the South Caucasus, in
particular, touched upon the last events of settlement of the Karabakh conflict. He
accentuated the approaches of Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh Republic to the issue on the
future status of Karabakh.
In the framework of his visit to Yugoslavia Armenia's foreign minister met with
representatives of UMIK and OSCE, who acquainted him with their problems and their actions
connected with the forthcoming election in Kosovo in Nov. Vardan Oskanian then left for
Monte Negro, where he will meet with the President of the republic Milan Jukanovic, the
prime minister and the minister of Foreign Affairs of Monte Negro.
US CO-CHAIR OF OSCE MINSK GROUP TO BE REPLACED BY US AMBASSADOR TO MOLDOVA
AUGUST 27. US co-chair of the OSCE Minsk Group Carey Cavanaugh will be
replaced by US ambassador to Moldova Rudolf Wilhelm Perina, the RFE/RL reports referring
to sources at the US department of state.
Perina specialized in issues of Russia, the NATO and Western Europe. In 1979-1981 he
worked at the US embassy to the USSR as well as at the NATO and at the US department of
state. Before the appointment as the US ambassador to Moldova he had held the post of
deputy assistant
of the secretary of state.
Perina is from California. Graduated from the Columbia and Chicago Universities. Commands
Russian, French, German, Rumanian and Czech.
