The Law of Unfoldment
Part II

by Andrei Yashurin

Unfoldment involves much more than accumulation of "spiritual" knowledge and participation in "spiritual" practices. As we unfold, all the aspects of our being come to their proper expression, which includes mind, emotion, and physical body. We actually feel ourselves more alive than ever before. We wonder whether Jesus meant this experience when he spoke of "more abundant life".

As Kahlil Gibran wrote,

The soul walks not upon a line, neither does it grow like a reed.
The soul unfolds itself, like a lotus of countless petals.

This is a powerful and true image of our transformation. As we unfold,we actually become more beautiful - and more attuned to beauty around us. God is the source of beauty of all creation.

We come to the realization that there is nothing ugly within us or about us. Although before we could judge and harshly criticize ourselves for real or seeming shortcomings, now we understand that this attitude only obstructed our progress. In truth, every part of our being has its purpose. It would be beneficial for us to learn to see evil as immature and undeveloped good. As so-called character defects are brought to the light and put into right perspective, they are transformed.

We "reconcile with our enemies" within, being aware that they are our friends in disguise. Even the feeling of dissatisfaction has its constructive use, when we see it rightly. Its says to us that there is greatness which is waiting to be expressed through us. There is untapped potential within us which is ready to be discovered and used. Dissatisfaction prompts us to search for it.

We already mentioned that the starting point of our unfoldment is meditation. By meditation I don't mean a specific technique which is taught in our days. We are free to meditate as we want, as long as we have in mind its true purpose. The essence of meditation is going into the silence and attuning ourselves to the voice of the Spirit within.

"When you pray, enter into your room. And shutting your door, pray to your Father in secret", said Jesus. Meditation is a detachment from the world, from mental atmosphere around us, and even from our own busy thoughts. It takes practice, but this method is surely worthy to be mastered.

As you stay alone with God, don't think of things which should be done - they will be done when the right time will come. Don't think about possible problems - God knows of them anyway. Just become silent. You will touch the issues of life.

The next step, perhaps more difficult for some of us, is detachment from who and what we are. The fact is, we are so identified with roles which we have to play in the game of life, that we can hardly see ourselves apart from them. "I am a employee in a specific position, a family member, a friend, a citizen with certain social status", we proudly say or think. All this is true about us only at the surface. Deep inside, we are spiritual and eternal beings in the process of eternal journey. Our I AM is never restricted by roles which we have to play at the present moment. They should never dictate what we could achieve. "Do not judge by appearances".

Stay open and receptive to the Spirit within, and you could be urged to do the things you never dreamed of before, something which you never deemed possible. Desires to express yourself in new and exciting ways will be quickened in you.
