God is Principle. This means that in our universe, governed by
the Law, certain causes lead to certain effects. Both positive
and negative consequences of all our actions cannot be avoided.
And yet, our path of life is not pre-determined, as some people
think. There is a wide variety of possibilities before us. And
the knowledge of the truth of our being delivers us from bonds
of deterministic thinking.
Those who assume that there is "the only right way" for them,
often are full of doubts and inner struggles. They are always
asking: "Am I right? Is this job or this place "the right one"
for me? Is this person "the right partner" for me? Is this
religion "the right one"? What will happen if I'll make
a mistake?"
Those people who understand their freedom are not obsessed
with compulsive desire to find "the only right way". They
know that there are many ways for them, which are equally
good. So, they just choose a direction and stick to it for
a while. They know that, having sufficient desire and will,
they may change their ways. They appreciate the place where
they are now, being aware of its positive aspects. And yet,
they are ready to move to something greater and more satisfying.
One of the deepest truths of our being is that we are so-creators
with God. The nature of things calls for our creative input.
Our world is not fixed - it lives, it grows, it evolves. God
is being manifested through us, but not against our will. It
is up to us to direct and to control the creative flow of life
through us.
Spiritual freedom is a mystery for many of believers. This
is especially true about those who like to talk about
"obedience", "submission", "humility", "spiritual
authority", "predetermination", and so on. It seems that many
of such theological concepts were invented in attempts
to evade the responsibility of freedom.
Certainly, if a person considers himself/herself "a poor sinner"
who needs to be fully submitted to God and to human authorities
in order to escape damnation, he/she doesn't find it necessary
to develop courage, wisdom, and talents. He/she might even
consider free self-expression dangerous, potentially leading
to pride and self-exaltation.
But the real authority is always an inner authority. God speaks
to us not from without, but from within. His voice is best heard
not in orders and pronouncements of religious leaders, but
in our own heart. The language of God is the language of
dreams, longings, desires, and visions. Those people who trust
in their dreams above what other people say, even above
obstacles and opposition, are truly wise.
We will always have as much freedom as, according to our opinion,
we can handle. And every time we find ourselves bound, we need
to remember that those restrictions are self-imposed.
Here are some positive statements we may use to develop awareness
of our freedom:
I lift up my eyes to see myself just as I am - free in the Spirit. I am free from negative thoughts and feelings of my past. I am free from negative thoughts and feelings of others. I am not limited by my circumstances or my environment. I am free to determine my response to every event in my life. I find my freedom in oneness with God. As I realize my freedom, I help others to become liberated.
