Part II By Andrei Yashurin
Effective prayer is a diligent prayer. It is better to have
this idea firmly settled in our mind before we start
praying. Otherwise, we may be easily disappointed by
situations where our unrealistic expectations were
not fulfilled.
Here and there we may see people's hunger for "instant
results" and "instant miracles." In our modern world, where
everything moves and changes so quickly, patience sometimes
seems to be a forgotten virtue. And yet, it is vitally
important for successful prayer life. In prayer, we do not
push buttons - we plant seeds. Some seeds grow rather slow,
other seeds grow faster, but there is no such thing as
instant growth.
We are told that God is a rewarder of those who diligently
seek Him (Hebrews 11:6). Diligence is the key to mastery
in all areas of life. Diligence implies persistent application
of spiritual principles which are related to prayer and our
communion with the spiritual realm. A diligent person continues
to move in the right direction even when it seems that
nothing happens. Since he/she has a strong foundation of faith,
he/she cannot be moved by appearances.
Through persistence we are coming from seeing the distant
light and following the light to abiding in the light.
We are coming from "applying the truth" as some external
remedy to being the truth in expression. We are coming from
dualistic perception of "us and God" to the realization of
our essential unity with Him. We become not only aware of God,
but immersed in God.
In love we live and move and have our being. In truth we live and move and have our being. True prayer is persistent, and yet it is peaceful and confident. It is a prayer of quiet assurance that does not know stress or strain. With our eyes open to behold "every spiritual blessing in the heavenlies" (Ephesians 1:3), we know that all that the Father has is ours. Nobody and nothing can take away our good. We are not anxious to "get an answer", because we know that it will surely come in its time, just like the day will follow the night. Things which are natural to us are attracted to us, and nothing can prevent this process. Prayer is not an emotional appeal to God to do something He forgot to do - it is a spiritual tool to transform our consciousness in order to receive blessings He already has in store for us. Therefore, effective prayer is not a random act - it is a mindset of a person who is constantly attuned to God and to His presence. He/she "prays always", even without speaking a single word. His/her life is a constant prayer. But does this mean that we can't get anything from God until we become so spiritually mature? Of course, no. We live by grace, and the love of God is freely extended to all people, even to those who seemingly oppose Him. My point is that God's grace and love are not to be taken lightly, as a justification of irresponsible spiritual life. We are called to grow toward perfection in God, and we will remain unfulfilled until we follow this call. Christ within us is both the call to God's glory and the promise of attainment of this glory.
