When we are young, everything looks to us new and exciting.
Every day becomes a day of discovery and adventure. As time
goes and we become older, we gradually loose this feeling.
More or less, the world becomes to us a commonplace, known
and predictable. Unconsciously, we assume that this is the
way all adults are supposed to think. When we become bored,
we look for a new artificial thrill, forgetting that there
was the time when we were thrilled just to be alive.
As God comes to our consciousness to awake us from spiritual
and mental sleep, He resurrects within us the feeling of
wonder, marvel, and awe of life.
There is a startling saying, found in an ancient
manuscript. Supposedly, it belong to Jesus, and in the context
of His teaching it looks authentic:
When they find, they will be disturbed. When they are disturbed, they marvel. And will reign over all. Wonder is the key to new discoveries, the ones that will ultimately lead us to mastery in spiritual and natural realms. It is a quality of every true scientist, and we all are called to study the science of Life. It is a quality of every true artist, and we all are meant to live artistic lives: to behold the beauty of God's creation, and to create beauty. Wonder is a natural feeling of any person that stays on the path of spiritual development. To me, it is one of the surest signs that a man/woman is truly alive. God is so big, and He is able to surprise us each day, when we truly seek to communicate with Him "face to face". It could be a good thing to ask ourselves when was the last time we were surprised by God. If we find that it was a long ago, perhaps, we need to be more sincere and more persistent in our search for Him. Unfortunately, it is possible for believers, after making one or two discoveries in the realm of the Spirit, to become satisfied with their "possessions". Those discoveries could be great and significant, above all what we could ask or think, but still small compared to the fullness of the Godhead, in which we live and move and have our being. One of my favorite Unity writers is John Dillet Freeman, the author of well-known "The Prayer of Protection". His monthly column in Unity Magazine is called "Life is a Wonder". Indeed, life is a wonder. Each human person is a wonder. God is a wonder. I am sorry to say, but those who think otherwise do not know life, people, and God, well enough. Here is what he wrote: When I am the mud crawler, I look at my pond and say, "This is the real world." And so it is. And when I have found wings, I look at the sky and say, "This is the real world." And so it is. I wonder if the nymph crawling at the bottom of its pound has any notion it will be more and there is a world beyond its pond. I think it must feel unvoiced stirrings. For is this not the way it is with you? Do you feel there is more in you than all you have been? And that there is life before you which you cannot dream of or conjecture? The good news for all of us is that this ability to wonder is not lost forever, no matter how "adult" we could feel. The child lives within each one on us. Let us, in our prayers and meditations, come down to the level where this child dwells, and embrace him/her. For so long, we suppressed and "disciplined" our child, but let this time our way of communication will be different. Let he/she teach us how to wonder. Let he/she teach us how to be truly alive. (to be continued)
