I believe that we all create our own reality through the
power of our faith. Part of this creative process is naming,
or giving definition to things and ideas that come to our
life (just as Adam gave names to all animals brought to
him by God).
Modern culture often teaches to distrust ourselves and our
creative abilities. Some people believe that they need
to follow definitions of things given by others, the ones
which can be found in dictionaries, but I do not think that
this approach is worthwhile. We are free to interpret
reality in our own way, and it is our interpretation
that shapes and forms it. If we feel that certain words
limit us in some way in our self-expression, we may
re-interpret them, give them new meaning, the one that
will be useful and helpful. We don't need to feel any
fear or guilt about it.
Among many other traditional religious ideas, the concept
of "not of this world" is worthy to be re-interpreted.
When I consider it in a positive way, I find it thrilling
and exciting.
I do love the world as a beautiful and wondrous creation
of God, and feel no desire to escape it in any way. However,
I do realize that all around us there is a mental world
created by humans. Being shaped and formed by erroneous
thoughts and beliefs of our race, it now affects every
person on earth. It puts a certain mental pressure upon
us. It wants us to conform and we will conform, if we
won't discard it claims by declaring our independence.
"And do not be conformed to this world (do not surrender
to its pressure), but be transformed by the renewing
of your mind" (Romans 12:2), wrote Paul. He was fully aware
of the fact that we are living under a pressure. He knew that
the process of deliberate rejection of the world's influence
should precede our transformation.
I am not of this world of suffering and limitations. I cannot be bound by what others think, say and do. I cannot be limited by what my forefathers thought, said, and did. The past is over, and I behold the dawn of the new day. I am free to find the Truth of God for myself, and to apply it in the best possible way. I am not conformed to blindness and ignorance of the human race. My eyes are open to see. My mind is transformed by the Supreme wisdom. I cast off the works of darkness, and put on the armor of light. Our supreme loyalty belongs to God, the only Source of our life. We look for no other Source, thus fulfilling the first commandment. We look for no other way, except the one that is shown to us by the Spirit. When we take this position, we establish proper relation with the outer world. Being free from the mental world that was created by humans, now we can truly love the world that was made by God, feeling that we are its important and essential part. We can feel nourishing connection with earth, and with all God's universe. We came to this earth not to flee from it, whether mentally of physically, but to bless and cultivate it, to make it a beautiful garden of God. If our key concepts are right, we will be true to this calling.
