Choices, choices...
When I think about choices, I often remember a philosopher's
parable about a donkey who starved to death, while standing
between two big piles of hay, because he could not choose
which one to eat first. I wonder if we at times act like
this animal.
Every day we are faced with choices, big ones and small
ones. It is one thing to be conscious of those choices,
and use your power to choose, but it is another thing to
make a big fuss about them. To tell the truth, most of the
choices we face are not choices between life and death,
or between worshipping Christ and worshipping Baal.
In many cases it really does not matter what we will choose,
as long as we stay true to ourselves, our core beliefs and
values. And if we dont know what are our beliefs and values,
it doesnt matter either. Perhaps, in this case our
experiences will help us to gain more clarity.
Is it really important whether we eat a hamburger or
cheeseburger as long as we are fed?
Does God care about this choice?
Is it really important whether we drink a Coke or a Pepsi
as long as we can quench our thirst?
Does God care about this choice?
Is it really important whether we drive a Toyota or
a Nissan as long as we have a convenient car to go around?
Does God care about this choice?
We don't make choices between life and death every day.
And even what we see as "death", could be a new life in
disguise. Seeming failure in one business can be a stepping
stone to a success in another business. Seeming failure
in relationships can set us free for new and better
relationships.
The false idea that makes us nervous and tense while making
a choice is that there is only one, "the right one" path
that we need to take in order to achieve happiness, success
and satisfaction. Of course, it cannot be true - if God
really gave us the freedom of choice, if we are really
sons and daughters of the Most High, if we are really
creators of our life and our destiny. There is not only
one option for us, there is an infinite range of options.
We are infinite beings.
"What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny
matters compared to what lies within us", said Emerson,
and I agree with him.
Happiness doesnt come from an outside, it is within you.
Your spouse cannot make you happy. You can be married to
the best person in the world, but still feel miserable
for many reasons. Prosperity does not depend on your
employment, or on current situation at the stock exchange.
Prosperity or poverty are the states of your mind, which
make themselves manifest in your affairs. You carry them
around, and you bring them to every new career or an
enterprise. You cannot escape yourself.
My recommendation for a successful life is to deal with
your attitudes, and let the outside events take care
of themselves. Develop such healthy attitudes as faith,
love, peace, joy, courage and enthusiasm. As long as you
are true to them, it really does not matter what will be
your choice.
You may take any direction. You may go any way. In the
long run, it won't make a big difference, because you will
bring your inner baggage to the new place of life, whatever
it may be (prosperity or poverty, happiness or discontentment).
All the outward circumstances will conform to your deepest
thoughts and attitudes about life. Even your earnest
prayers won't trick this law.
Let us get rid of indecision, because it is a sin, which
is rooted in ignorance and subconscious fear.
What are we afraid of? You may ask this question to yourself.
You may list your fears, and then check the statistics.
Chances that your fears will come to pass are low. And if
you will throw away those fears, they will be even less,
for you wont attract them.
"My life was filled with terrible tragedies, and most of
them never happened", said Mark Twain.
Are we afraid that we will be left without help? Are we
afraid that God will fail us? This will never happen.
"The Lord upholds ALL who fall, and raises up ALL who are
bowed down" (Psalm 145:14).
"My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth"
(Psalm 121:2).
Have no fear, for your God is near.
If we want our life to be transformed, we need to be
transformed by the renewing of our mind (Romans 12:2).
It is the only method that in known in Gods scheme of being.
