There Is a True Light
by Andrei Yashurin

There was the true Light which gives light to every person coming into the world.
John 1:9

And the light shines in darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it.
John 1:5

There is a true light of understanding that shines in the darkness of ignorance.
There is a true light of assurance that shines in the darkness of confusion.
There is a true light of love that shines in the darkness of resentment.
There is a true light of faith that shines in the darkness of doubts.
This light is within you.

The message of Jesus, addressed to His disciples, was, "You are the light of the world" (Matthew 5:14). The message of God for you today is no different.

No matter what your personal challenges may be, deep down in your heart there is a light of God, that is able to expel all the darkness from your life and to make you a happy and radiant channel of God's light in this world.

What do we need to know to live up to our high calling? What are the main characteristics of a true light-bearer?

1. They seek to give, not to get.

Light is a radiance. It is safe to say that light is a pure giving. It gives without reservations, without strings attached. Think about that.

We all know that it is good to take care about ourselves, but let it serve the purpose of higher self-expression and not self-protection. As long as we are focused on protection, preservation and survival, we starve and remain unhappy. As long as we dedicate ourselves to sharing of our treasures, we stay open to the inflow of God's abundance and happiness.

2. They are fearless.

The key to overcoming fear is an understanding that, ultimately, there is nothing to fear. Darkness is an absence of light - that's why it can never overcome the light. Evil is simply a lack of good - that's why it will never overpower good.

Sometimes people are quite successful in hiding their fears. This is understandable, because we don't want to feel bad about ourselves. It may be a useful thing for you to ask yourself: "What is a label that I put on my fear?" For some, it is "wisdom". For some, it is a "common sense".

I believe in wisdom and a common sense, but I do not want them to block my light. I am always willing to re-evaluate them. I will gladly exchange my wisdom to the one that comes from above, to the one that helps me to be all I can be.

3. They do not limit their light to a narrow circle.

There are no reasons to argue with an idea that some people are closer to us than others, and we do good when we give them more time and more attention. However, I set up my mind to be open to all people - just like Jesus, just like the Father.

He called us to extend our love to all, in other words, to be "the children of our Father, who makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust" (Matthew 5:45).

Be like God - this is what Jesus is trying to say. Do not try to figure out how worthy are the people every time you are going something good. Let your light shine, even at those who are not worthy, according to some human standards.

4. They never impose their light.

Every person has a choice, to walk in the light or to step into darkness. People can deliberately shut our their minds and hearts from the light of love and truth, in a large or in a small degree. It is their choice, and we need to respect it, just like God respect our choice. When this happens with our friends or family members, we become concerned. We may start to act in a manipulative way, or become harsh and judgmental. When our light is rejected, it is always necessary to think that God respects people's freedom above all else. When people act in an intrusive manner, their light becomes darkness. The very fact that they rely on their willpower proves that they do not trust God.

Let go, and let God. Let go your attempts to transform others, and allow God to work in their lives. Just be who you are - the light of the world. Let your light shine.
